People didn't get sick from raw eggs until recently. That's because until about 1985, salmonella was only on the egg shells and not inside the eggs. It's still not in very many eggs, and most healthy adults won't get dangerously sick if they do eat a little raw egg that is contaminated. It is possible, though. (I think the stat for eggs with salmonella inside the egg shell is something like 1 in 20,000.) Babies, elderly people, and people with comprised immune systems are at the highest risk, but anybody can get sick. You never know if you might be coming down with strep throat or some other illness that would make you unable to fight off a bug that you would have been able to handle a few days previously.
For a while, it was assumed that the salmonella itself had changed and had become strong enough to penetrate the shell. Now many people think that it's acutally due to the antibiotics and other garbage the chickens are fed. If that's the case, eating high-quality organic eggs is the way to go.
