If so, how strong was the worst one? Here's a link showing major Atlantic storms.

And the Saffir/Simpson Scale

Not all the storms are on there. Carol (1954) was a Cat 3 and isn't on this list.

For me Carol is the only major hurricane I've been in. Donna (1960) dumped a bunch of rain on us but the wind was minimal.

Bob and Gloria both missed us. In fact with Gloria, the worst of the wind happened when the sun came out at the end.

The Blizzard of 78 was like a hurricane. We had the eye of the storm pass directly over our house. When the clouds moved back in, it snowed even harder!

not a hurricane, but i was in a gale on a 50' boat in the pacific ocean one time.

I servived several Typhoons on the otherside of the world. Not to sure on the catagory strenght they were. One was in port (I was in the Navy) and the others were all out to sea...nasty those were.

Yup! Hurricane Opal hit the panhandle of FL (eye went ashore at Ft Walton area) 5 weeks after DH and I moved to Panamam City FL. She was a strong Cat 4, almost Cat 5, bit disorganized right be fore lanfall to a weak (relative term) Cat 4/strong Cat 3.

Yes, We always prepare for the worst and are delighted when one passes without too much damage!
When we are expecting one here on the Cape,I tape X's on the windows(I wonder if that really works?), have extra water on hand, propane for the grill, close up the pool, put patio furniture away, batteries, oil lamps etc. Then we get out the board games because we usually lose power.

a hurrican????? how about 7 of em? (think it's 7, so many i forget)

Bob, Fran, Bertha, Isabell, Floyd, Denis, Alex

(ok i can't remember then all)

Hey Roberta~
I remember preparing for both Gloria and Bob, (they wouldn't even let us leave work early!!!). My daughter was born a week before the Blizzard of '78. I had the police deliver formula to us because I had run out. Now that was an interesting storm.

Yes, a couple on coastal NC. I think that they were 2's and one bordered on a 3. It wasn't very fun. The water was brown for weeks, the power was out for days, and everything was closed for awhile. I think one person died in the fist one also. :(

The only good thing about it was the beach combing afterward. If you avoid the pieces of houses washing up on the beach that is. I found some shells that I had never seen wash up before. The current also blew in sea hares that looked like purple, bulbous liver colored monstrosities. Oh yeah, they squirted ink too.

I was in Philadelphia when Isabel came through last year. It was not particularly bad, but I ended up spending an extra night in Philly and returning home on Saturday morning.

Hurricane Isabel just last September. The morning after, as we walked outside all we could smell was wet wood. Trees were down all over, but somehow the trees on our land were spared! As we drove around the area, we were in awe of the devastation.

Isabel, roughly the size of the state of Colorado, unleashed its fury over a wide region. In total, over 4.3 million people were reported to be without power. This included 525,000 homes and businesses in North Carolina, 1,250,000 in Maryland, 78,000 in the District of Columbia, 160,000 in New Jersey, 500,000 in Pennsylvania, 50,000 in Delaware, 21,000 in West Virginia. Virginia was the hardest hit, with more than 1.6 million customers without power on the night of September 18.

We stayed here when Alicia hit in 1983. It was a Cat 3. Luckily we didnt have to much damage to our house. I was just a teen then so I didnt really understand how dangerous they could be.

I've lived in South Louisiana all of my life so I've been through several hurricanes. Several where I grew up, which was about an hour and a half south of here and a few since I've been here in Baton Rouge. The worst was Andrew. I don't remember what he was when he got to us. I was in 7th grade at the time and just terrified.

d'oh!!! i think i must have blocked isabel out of my mind.

i had my wisdom teeth (all 4 impacted) removed the morning after isabel blew through. i was hoping that the power would be out. ;)

Yes, 2 up here in MA, Gloria & Bob, and 1 in WDW, Erin. I dont think any of them were really extremely bad ones. ;)

HURRICANE BOB
(CAT 2 - August 19, 1991)
AND

G-L-O-R-I-A!
1985 she was a CAT 3 when it the Carolinas but was only a CAT 2 when it came north...did more damage on LI....than Cape Cod...kind of mild compared to Bob 6 years later!

Gloria....Cat 3...In NJ....Scared out of mind....and about to add Charley to that list

I've been in a number of hurricanes but the one that affected us the most was Irene in 1999. Although it was a minimal hurricane, it tore the roof and skylight off our vacation home in Melbourne Beach, FL. It caused about $80,000 in damage and luckily insurance covered a fair portion of it. The entire place had to be gutted and all of our belongings were lost. On the up side, it looked beautiful when the work was finished and we sold it for a tidy profit in 2002. :)

As stressful as that was, I can't imagine what it must be like to lose one's primary home. :(

I live in the Caribbean, can't choose only one option, too many hurricanes to even remember all of them.

Have I experienced any hurricanes??? I've lived here in the panhandle of FL for 10 years. The question should be for me..how many hurricanes???

We were at WDW in 1995 when Hurricane Erin (Category 1) passed within 35 miles of us. The eye passed by in the middle of the night and I actually managed to sleep through the storm.

Ten years earlier, we were visiting my grandmother in Zephyrhills (Florida) over Labor Day weekend when Hurricane Elena was dancing around the Gulf of Mexico. The storm never made landfall, but I felt like a caged animal. All I could do was pace back and forth while Elena went round and round the Gulf. According to the web, 300,000 evacuated their homes and four people were killed.

I certainly am praying for those who are facing Charley today.
