Have you ever done an Independent Trade?

I'm looking at all my options and Dean offered the possibility of trading my points independent of Disney to increase my options. I don't know anything about it and was wondering if anyone had done this before and had some input.

I made an independant trade with another DVC member to go to HI and stay in their private condo. Worked fantastic! No trade fee's, was able to be flexible with dates.. Really good to do with another member if you can. I hooked up with them right here, on the trade board... Just posted what I was looking to do and they replied. Does require ALOT of trust.... So get references.

I actually had arranged to do it once but the other person ended up offering me their unit for a rental at what was a better price. I know others have done it. As mentioned, you get owners benefits and priorities plus you avoid exchange fees. You may also be able to pin down your unit type or location, say ocean front, which you can't do as an II exchange. The best place to do this is TUG at www.tug2.net. They actually have two different direct exchange listings. One where you list what you have and that you will consider a direct exchange. The other where you post exactly what you have and want. You should post yours and also respond to other posts that might interest you. Just realize there are few exchanges worthy of a full one to one DVC exchange. And in some cases it might costs more points than through II.

I'm about to do this with a good friend. They own a timeshare in Mexico and would like to take their son to WDW. Obviously, this is a trusted relationship and we can work out details with one another.
