Have you ever cleaned your carpet? Steam or Dry Clean?

We have to have our carpet professionally cleaned. It needs it bad! I have been calling around for prices, and I've gotten quotes for steam cleaning. I had someone refer me to a guy who does a "dry cleaning" for carpet. I've never heard of that. It's a bit more expensive (about 50.00) and I guess the benefit is, you can walk on it right away. It is supposed to be just as good as the steam cleaning, but I'm leary.

Anyone have any experiance with this? Good/bad/ugly?

We have used the 'steam' (actually hot water extraction) method in the past and have been pleased. Maybe these will help a bit, Leah.

We bought our own carpet cleaner a couple of months ago. We bought the Bissell upright (looks like a vaccuum cleaner). I love it. Now I can clean any of my carpets anytime I want and it does a great job. Pet stains are a thing of the past in my house now.
