Have you ever been on a cruise?

We went on our first cruise last year RCI Mariner f the seas we had a wonderful time it was my DW her Mom and Dad, Her brother and his wife.
We had so much fun that we are all going again in may of 06 but adding her other brother his wife and my DW's twin brother (9 total) follow the link in my signature to see some of our cruise pics and the links on our cruise page to other cruise pages.

We cruised on Disney And Royal Caribbean. We had a terrific time on Disney, and would love to go back. The food was good, service was great, just an overall great time.

We didn't enjoy Royal Caribbean. The food was fair at best, the service was generally lousy, and the atmosphere was more of a frat party than a family vacation. We found the public areas smokey and noisy and overcrowded. If I won a free cruise on them I wouldn't take it. Seriously, we were that disappointed.

Additionally although our cabin on RCCL was about double the size as the one on DCL, due to the inefficient layout it felt the same size. DCL has the best cabin layouts for sure, and they are considerably larger to comparable cabins on other lines.

While you'll pay a little more on DCL, the value you'll receive will far exceedwhat you'd get on RCCL.

Hogwash...I've been on a Disney cruise, Norwegian and 3 Royal Caribbean cruises and RC is buy far the best...food, service, activities, rooms, Disney doesn't compare to RC.

HI! DH and I went on a cruise with my family (8 total) this past July. Did 9 days and 3 ports. Lots of sea days b/c instead of flying we sailed right out of NYC. Convenient but never again-too many sea days and it got old quick.
I think 7 days is good-anything shorter might feel rushed.
Dh did not get sea sick. I took 2 dramamine a day (one in the am and one in early evening) and I was okay. First day at sea was bad for me-couldnt get my sea legs. The rest of our group was fine!
We cruised Carnival which we wouldnt do again. Some of the group has sailed Royal Caribbean and Princess and those 2 seemed to be of better quality than Carnival based on our experience with the ship/service/food.

We would like to cruise again but would try a different cruiseline other than Carnival. Hopefully DCL is in our future! :sunny:

We've been on 3 cruises, all with Carnival. They are FANTASTIC! We are definitely hooked and will be doing many more in years to come. We love seeing several different places all on one trip and only having to unpack once. Food, activities, shows, service are all wonderful. Other than those who get seasick, I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't enjoy this.

I also recommend checking out cruisecritic.com. It is a great resource for cruising, comparable to DIS for Disney trips.

So now I'm not entitled to an opinion? My experience on RCCL was inferior to DCL, and the perceived value of DCL was far superior. That's my opinion, and while you might feel that RCCL was a good experience, mine was poor.

We had many unresolved issues while onboard. We tried to get resolution and were unable to. Since we've been off I've sent two letters to RCCL and haven't gotten a response from either. I sailed in their highest level of accomodation, and before the cruise we were already looking at booking another cruise while onboard. After the cruise I wiouldn't sail with them again if it were free.

You would think that they would at least follow up with someone who have valid and provable complaints after the cruise...the silence has been deafening. That alone is enough to make one think twice about booking with them.

Haven't done a cruise yet. We want to do a cruise for our 10th anniversary in 2007.
One of my closest friends has done like 5-6 cruises. I consider her an expert and I will be getting advice from her.

You don't say which RCI ship you were on, the itinerary, length, time of year, etc. All those variables can conceivably contribute to the atmosphere on ANY cruise line. I'm quite surprised that if you stayed in an Owners Suite (presumably the "highest level of accomodation") your complaints would go unresolved, since we (in a lowly balcony cabin) had wonderful service at all times. However, I'm not questioning you. I'll admit that I'm curious as to what your complaints are. Every email that I've sent to RCI so far has been answered promtply.

You're more than entitled to you opinion. As a matter of fact, if you don't sail RCI again, that's one less person I have to stand in line behind to board the beautiful ships.

And, for clarification, we loved our DCL cruise last year but the Navigator experience totally blew it away and gave us a lot more bang for the buck. You won't see me on DCL again -- unless I hit the lottery. I recently compared the DCL cruise we had booked with the RCI cruise I replaced it with. DCL was $2K more for an interior room than what my RCI balcony room will cost.

Mh DH and I have been on 6 cruises -- all DCL. On 12/27/05, I will book DCL #7 - 11/25/06. We love cruising.

DH and I honeymooned on Holland America's Rhotterdam (I think) in Alaska for seven days. I think we were two of 25 people under age 75. Didn't have a problem with that except when my luggage never arrived and the only clothes in the boutique were sequined blazers.

Losing the luggage really marred the first few days. Since I got a look at the "Behind the scenes", I really dislike this industry. I'm not saying I would never go on a cruise again, but they are all about money and pr. I wanted to handle the lost luggage myself, but they insisted they could do a better job and the suitcase never showed up. I was very skeptical because I did a lot of flying when I was in college. There were several times that my luggage got lost but it was always found and returned to me within 24 hours. What really irked me is that the ship said I'd be paid $50 for every port the luggage didn't show up. When I went to claim that they said it had to be off my shipboard account. WHAT???

Aside from that, Alaska was wonderful and if you were to cruise there, I'd say go all the way from Vancouver to Anchorage. I'm more a land person and prefer a port everyday or close to it.

I hope I didn't put a damper on this thread. Everyone here had a wonderful experience cruising and I will probably try it again some day. Definitely not with Holland America though.

We took a Celebrity Cruise to the Baltics and It was fantastic! I would recomend it~

We have only been on 2 cruises so far--dcl and rcl. We enjoyed dcl and are glad that we did it. but enjoyed the rcl so much more and plan to go back soon.

There was so much more to do in terms of activities during the day and night, food available all night at the cafe, parades and other activities in the promenade (we were on the mariner), shows were good, food was very good, more sports activities, definitely more pool chairs, a library for quiet times, a game room.

We had great service. We saw our room stewards daily--they came and introduced themselves to us before we left port and asked about special needs, etc. Our waiters were very attentive to our needs--I never had to ask for drink refills--in fact before I could get to the table, my beverage was being placed at my seat. The food selection in the buffet area was tremendous and the hours it was open were great.

My ds loved the tween/teen club and activities. I liked the layout of the kids clubs as they had the ability to do both inside and outside activities.

Everyone talks about the casino and bars. Actually, I forgot the casino was even there--it is such a small area of the ship. BINGO was promoted more than the casino! Most of the bars are open to the common area and are more of a gathering area. We never liked the ones on Disney (where the night activities were) as they were dark and so smokey! The nightclub geared to the younger set is out of the way.

Rooms--our layout was similar to dcl, but we had more storage over the desk area and in the bathroom and my luggage fit under their beds while it didn't on dcl. I also liked the closet design better.

Embarkation was smooth and quick and I thought leaving the ship was smooth, too. We took our time, no one was lined up like we saw on dcl.

Would we do another dcl? Yes, but not right away as we can get so much more for our money on rcl and other ships.

JMHO for what it is worth. We did 7 days both times. I would probably not do less than that and would even like to do more so we could have some more days at sea.

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

We've sailed DCL in the Royal Suite and in a balcony cabin. We recently sailed the Navigator in an Owner's Suite, which is not their top suite but is plenty big enough for 2. I totally agree with Ducklite. While the Voyager class ships are huge, their food, service and accommodations do not fare well compared with the Magic and Wonder ~ and I am not fond of Disney food, so for me to say RCI is worse means it's bad.

It's all a matter of opinion. We thought Navigator blew Wonder out of the water (no pun intended) on every level except cabin size. The double bathroom on Wonder was nice, but certainly not worth the extra money.

My problem lies where someone posts an opinion (and doesn't elaborate so that readers can get all the details and form their own opinions) totally trashing an entire fleet of ships based on one cruise. I feel that this does not allow the readers to form an accurate opinion -- and gives the feeling of being just more propaganda.

DH and I have taken 2 Disney Magic 7-night cruises, 1 Disney Wonder 4-night cruise and 1 Carnival Fantasy 4-night cruise and we LOVED THEM ALL!!!

We are going on Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas next month and CAN'T WAIT!!!

We both LOVE cruising and wish we could afford to do it more often!!

Doing the research is half the fun. Get cruise books from a local travel agent, or order them directly from the cruise line web sites. Go to Cruise Critic's web site and you can research ALL of the cruise lines. Have fun deciding which cruise you want to take!!

Book EARLY to get the best price!

We went through a TA for our first cruise, and Dreams Unlimited for 2 of the Disney cruises but booked Carnival and Royal Caribbean on our own.

We were on the RCCL Mariner. We were in the Royal Suite--double the size of an OS. The DCL crusie was the first week of September, RCCL second week of October--so weather was the same for both, I have no complaints about weather which isn't controlled by the cruiselines anyhow. We cruised out of PC for both--Disney's terminal is MUCH MUCH nicer and better organized, especially luggage handling on debarkation. Many "perks" offered in their written literature when we booked never materialized--no priority debarkation or tendering, no fresh flowers in room, no alcohol in room, and we weren't allowed to have meals delivered from the diningroom, only the very limited room service menu. We had maintenance issues in the cabin--burned lightbulbs--they were unable to replace some as they were out of that type, the bathroom door was warped and wouldn't close, slippers only in mens size--they were out of ladies, TV in bedroom broken, etc. Had it been one thing it could have been overlooked, but there were a lot of issues, and the attitude wasn't , We're sorry" it was "Yeah, so?".

We liked the concierge and our steward, but the servers in the dining room were pushy about the guest service card to the point that it was bad show. The first night when we declined to order teh wine package, the bar server walked off in a huff and we didn't see him again the other three nights we ate in the main dining room.

We had a VERY humiliating experience with the Captain, caused by his administrative assistent's mix up, (I have proof in writing of this) and not only did we get a bunch of excuses and no apology, when they tried to fix it they created an even worse situation. Again, the attitude was a lot of excuses and no apology.

You're more than entitled to you opinion. As a matter of fact, if you don't sail RCI again, that's one less person I have to stand in line behind to board the beautiful ships.

I never said the ships weren't beautiful, although I prefered the decor and set up of DCL. But I wouldn't take that away from RCCL, mmy biggest beef with the actual ship was the art auction all over the place and the smoke that poured out of all the bars and into the open public spaces. I also thought the noise level was simply atrocious, as did many that I cruised with. The pushing of alcohol was ridiculous, I walked six steps out of my room and there would be a bar server by the elevators hawking drinks of teh day.

I paid $1000 more for my room on RCCL (I had a cat 3 on DCL). Yes, the RCCL Royal Suite is larger, but so much of the space is just this wasted entryway/piano area, that it didn't feel larger. We much prefered the master bedroom layout on DCL as well. The level of amenities and service that we received from DCL was far superior to what we got on RCCL, where service was a lot of empty promises and excuses. This describes RCCL perfectly--their idea of cheese and crakers is a couple cubes of swiss, a couple cubes of cheddar, six grapes and two plastic wrapped packages of Saltines.

I have been on 2. A Carnival cruise during spring break my senior year in college. Had a ball. We also went a cruise throughout the smaller Tahitian islands on our honeymoon. We will go on our first disney cruise in May :cool1:

I went on my first cruise last spring. We sailed Carnival out of New Orleans to Calica and Cozumel, both very wonderful port stops. I personally didn't enjoy the "days at sea" as much. We had two. The ship was very crowded and even nearing New Oleans in early April, it's chilly on the water.

So if I were to do another cruise....I would go in the summer and to more ports. :)

We go on a cruise every year. Our last one was in February this year and our next one is in February (only 10 more Saturdays to go). We like Princess because of personal choice dining. When we were in St. Thomas Princess docks and the Disney ship was anchored so they had to tender in. They probably paid twice what Princess is went some of the same ports but had to tender. (Get on small boats to take you to shore)

My kids also like the kids programs on Princess.

If you think you will get sea sick take medicine starting the night before you cruise and if you still get sick the ship's doctor can give you a shot that will end the sickness.
