Have you ever been completely flat broke?

Yep. Many many times. I was so poor at one point that we had only bred and water to eat for a week. You have no idea how wonderful it is when the food bank drops off bags of food. I cried. And I've never been so grateful for gvt sponsored programs as I was at that time.

No, I've been employed since I was a pre-teen with a paper-route.

Had hard times, sure, but never been penniless.

Yes, it builds character. I was a starving college student. I got jobs that offered free food. Well actually the cook took pity on us (hotel workers) and bent the rules!

It is character building!! You can't take for granted the beauty of having enough cash in your pocket to buy a sandwich anymore, that's for sure!!

Today is as close as I have ever come. But guess what? I just got a Job! I'm sooo Happy!!!!!!!!

my mom says that we were this way many times when I was little.

My parents divorced when I was 3, and my mom was a single parent to myself and my brother who is 3 years older. She went back to college full time after the divorce, and we lived on campus. She worked as a waitress on the weekends. She said on weekends it snowed, we were litterally BROKE, until the next weekend.

I never noticed, and my brother said he never did either

Yes, right now. I actually had to count out change to be able to buy diapers tonight. But I go back to work soon with my first paycheck coming on the 15th. I can't wait. We have managed to hide it from our oldest dd until last week. She was asking to go out for ice cream and we had to tell her again that we couldn't afford it and she came right out and asked "Are we poor?" I told her yes, right now we are, but we will make it and be just fine.

Yep. That's how I quit smoking. Can't smoke if you don't have the $$$ to buy them!!
That's been >20 years ago.
Many, many times we ate hot dogs or mac and cheese (the 10 boxes for a dollar on sale kind!)..... Some people have no idea.

Oh yeah. I lost my job when dd14 was a baby...2 months after I moved into my own apartment. No income. No child support. It was a really tough hole to crawl out of, but eventually we made it.
