Have you ever been accidently controversial??

Gem, I'm glad that you came back!:D

Yeah, I have extreme opinions, and I usually put my foot in my mouth. I mean well though.;)

Some people in RL tell me I'm so nice. I have no idea where they are getting this from, because I'm not!;)

I once responded to a Transportation forum post here about a certain airlines ownership. I looked up the info and posted the proper owner. Well....I got jumped all over and called names by a person (no longer here) That person complained to a moderator who yanked my reply off. I was the newer poster and the other person had many, many posts. Then the poster started to PM me accussing me of saying she was a lier. I PM'd back the source links I had but that made it worst. I just stopped using that logon name and reregistered the ID I have now. That was a few years ago.

I have plenty of opportunities in life to rock the boat. This is my laughing place. I know it's easy for comments to be taken the wrong way.

I don't think I've started any controversial threads but certainly my responses to some threads have been viewed as controversial. I think some of the most controversial threads have been any involving parenting. Most of us have things we are very passionate about and get a real emotional charge when these things are questioned or belittled.

Yes I have been taken as being controversial before but honestly I try very hard to word my replies to be non-threatening.

Of course there have been times when I have really WANTED to say something to somebody, but I usually restrain myself and say nothing.

But you can't please all of the people, all of the time and you can't help but upset somebody at some point.

Originally, the Disney Club was through employers. I accidently found out that my company had a membership and that I could get a card. I picked it up and was very pleasantly surprised at the discounts offered. Being a friendly person, I emailed a friend at work and told her that she should go to HR and pick up a card. Little did I realize the power of email. Very soon, HR was overrun with people asking for Disney Club cards. They called me and told me that they were very unhappy that I had told people about this. I found that to be very odd. Why have a perk for employees that you don't tell them about? Anyway, for awhile I was the employee most hated by HR. I didn't really mind, because many other people who'd gotten the Disney Club cards were very fond of me!

Yes, but it wasn't on these boards....

People made me feel terrible and I didn't post anymore after that...someone copied their screen name to *look* like mine but they put a 1 instead on an l, and started posting nasty things posing as me.

All I said was, after my original trip to WDW, I was surprised at the cost of food. I am a DL vet, but since DL doesn't offer NEARLY as much in the way of sit-down food, I felt like I was constantly paying way too much for meals. And it was really my first vacation where we paid for everything- no parents grabbing the tab ( I went from living at home being pretty dependent upon my parents for stuff since I was a full time college student to being married and suddenly being in charge of my money- one is always more cautious when they're spending their own $$!!!). What I posted was, I was shocked at the Brown Derby charging $14 for a tuna sandwich that didn't come with a side salad or something like that, so we went somewhere else. I know, I know, now I would pay it without blinking, cause, hey, it's Disney World and the Brown Derby is one of the nicer park restaurants. But then I was naive and thought a tuna sandwich should cost more like $8-9 in a sit down restaurant. Since it wasn't in the range I thought it "should" be, we went elsewhere and my DH thought I was being dumb.

You woulda thought I said something completely horrid with the nasty replies I got! People telling me to lighten up (but not in so kind of words) that I was a tad-wad, what did I expect, etc. I remember sitting there with tears in my eyes cause I just wanted to share my experience!

I love the DIS Boards cause for the most part, everyone is friendly and supports different views about how to go to WDW. If you want to be thrifty- go for it- stretch that dollar! If you want to spend a ton of money- WaHoo! We all share the love of Disney and that's what matters, not which restaurants you go to and whether or not you stay at the All Stars or concierge at the GF.

:D

Oh my! I have intentionally made a few waves on the debate board but I try so hard to play nice on the CB. I pass over MANY threads without replying because I realize that my point of view would not be appreciated.

One time I posted a 100% innocent reply and was shocked to later see the response. Someone had taken offense and tore me to shreds. My heart almost stopped beating. I went back and read and re-read my post but could find nothing offensive in it. Fortunately, a few other folks had replied that their attack was out of line and so I just left a sincere apology.

Glad to see that I'm not alone.

Peggy

Here on the DIS I don't like to rock the boat too much. I'm a substitute teacher and very opinionated in "real" life so I come here mostly for the fun of it and to get away from some of the craziness of my job, raising teens, and a hubby that sometimes drives me nuts!! :bounce:

I once started a thread titled "What's in your fanny pack" over on one of the Universal forums. I got many replies along the lines that you would expect, but the thread took on a rather humorous side note. It would appear that in the UK, fanny is slang for a female body part! Some folks could not imagine why I would ask "what's in your"... you get my drift. ;) Oh, BTW, over there they refer to them as "bum bags".

I relpied to a thread about public or private schools and I just gave my opinion according to my circumstances, and boy that was not the right thing to do! I got plenty of posts after that about my personal thoughts.....WELL....from that point on I only state the facts and no opinions at all. I will reply to things that I know the answer to. I will never give a personal opinion again. When I read something someone posted, or replied to, I read it and go on.....If that is what they want to think then SO BE IT!!!! Why go attack them for their opinions? Yes we are entitled to them but why stirr the pot?????

I've been controversial once or twice, or actually I should say people here have taken what I have said and turned it into controversy. Luckily it's never been anything that has spread out of control.

My pet peeve, something I usually have to speak up about, is when a newbie gets flamed for asking a simple question, or stating an opinion. I may not agree with what the newbie is posting, but I will jump to their defense. We were all new here at one time or another.

I think more people need to take a few minutes before they hit the "submit reply" button sometimes and ask themselves if it could be taken the wrong way.

An additional question to this, Melora, might be, 'Have you ever been intentionally controversial??'

And well said, Grog.

I think I have been "accidentally controversial" right here on the DIS. ;)
