Have you cruised with an arm cast?

I can't believe that I'm even having to post this! My lovely dh broke his arm Sunday when he was 4wheeling, and we are leaving for our cruise in 2 weeks! (Yes, I could choke him...:duck: ) However, he is not a big Disney fan, and now I'm worried about how much he will miss. Can you even swim with a cast on your arm? Any hints, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! ::yes::

I do know that they have casts now that you can shower and swim with. Saw them at Disney in May and dh (pediatrician) confirmed they are using them now. Of course it looked very strange to see a casted arm in the pool!

Does he already have the cast or is he still splinted? If he doesn't have it yet, I'd ask to get that kind.

He'll have a great tan line! :)

Thanks ohiominnie! I just called him & told him what you said. He went to get casted Monday, and they said it was too swollen. So, he will go back in a week or so. I just can't believe this has happened. I think if he gets on the 4wheeler again, I'm just going to let him have it instead... :faint:

You will definitely be able to spot us on the cruise. I'm trying to talk him into a DIS lime green cast! ::yes::

See you in a few weeks!

My DS broke his arm 2 weeks before we cruised at Halloween. He had a regular cast on his arm but we got him a waterproof latex cover for use while swimming. It was made of latex (no jokes, please, we've already heard them all!!!) and looked a bit strange but he managed to swim and snorkel with it. He also had a different, slightly less constrictive cover ( the latex one was very tight) for use in the shower. He managed fine both at Disney World and on the cruise and I think the only thing he couldn't do that he wanted to was the Banana Boat at Castaway Cay, as he wouldn't have been able to hold on with his bad arm. I wish I'd have thought of the lime green cast - it would have made us easier to spot!

Nope I usually cruise with my wife !. The old arm cast stays home:hyper: :hyper:

Seriously I hope he enjoys his cruise as much as possible.

Ok, I was asking for it! And here I was expecting a comment from BD... :p

Surprisingly, he's doing pretty well & staying positive. Even though, they will probably MAKE him take off from work, and use his vacation time for 6-8 weeks. They could let him work out of the district office for that time, but by the time the Colonel gets it on his desk & approves it, it will probably be time for the *!@* cast to come off! :yo-yo:

For our Summer '00 cruise I had a cast to just below my elbow as a result of a broken thumb. I got a regular cast and the ortho told me the waterproof sleeves work fine. Well, they did for showering and such for the few weeks before the cruise. However, I sprung a leak while on a snorkle tour in choppy water. I spent two hours before dinner that evening hacking and tearing the cast off with my Swiss Army knife. Thumb was still a little tender, but no problems as a result. Doesn't sound like that will be an option for you though. Go with the water proof cast! Looking back, I would have absolutely insisted on one. We did notice at least one child on our cruise with one. He didn't miss a beat. Just give the doctor a heads up before you go in for the cast to make sure they have the material on hand. Good luck.
