Have you bought a nebulizer for home use? How much was it?

Mine is finally in and approved and the delivery guy just called to say he was on the way and that I owed $139 for it! Now, I have insurance so I was quite surprised by that cost... how much do those little machines cost?

I told him that we weren't expecting that much and as much I would like to breathe, I just can't swing that much right now. I honestly was expecting maybe $50 tops - not almost 3x that. He is calling back to the supply company to get more details on what the insurance covered and such and is going to call me back.

What did you pay for yours? Did insurance cover most of it?

The nebulizers I've gotten for my son were written as a prescription and were covered by my insurance. I just picked them up at the pharmacy. If you have difficulty getting it covered, PM me - I have two and I can lend you one as long as you need it. :sunny:

Call your insurance and see if the coverage is on durable medical goods. They are usually covered but not the same as a drug perscription. When my DD needed one that is how we had to work the coverage but we didn't pay anything out of pocket.

I just bought one for DS last week. It cost me $100.00 and I paid out of pocket. DH contacted our insurance and they said to submit the bill and they will reimburse us.

It worked miracles for DS, so please use yours!

we got ours from the Doctor's office for free....I believe they billed the insurance for it, but it didn't cost us anything out of pocket.

We have a nebulizer. My pediatrician gave it to me, and they charged my insurance for it-- so I didn't pay for it, but I believe it was around $150-$200. I do pay for the setup that I replace every six months (mask and tubing) that is around $15. You should call your insurance and see if it is covered.

Ours are not covered by insurance at all. They will pay for the albuterol solution that has to go into the machine but not the machine itself. I believe we paid about $150 for the first one (large and bulky) and $300 for the smaller, portable one that will also plug into the cars cigarette lighter or outlet.

Wow has times changed. We bought our 10 years ago and paid $350. Insurance didn't cover it, but we were able to write it off as a medical expense on our taxes, big whoop.

That medicine is so harsh. I remember we were suppose to give my kids their treat once every 8 hours, but the side effects were horrible. So we had to cut the dosage down to 1/2 every 4 hours and the side effects were still there but not as bad. My dd would shake so bad, and have such a rapid heart beat-I thought what was worse not breathing-or having your child have a heart attack at 8 yrs old.

I can speak about this first hand. Before I got my current position I was between jobs and did medical billing for a nursing company. We did a TON of neb work for local pediatrician offices. Pretty much you go in with a sick child and they need a nebulizer, our company would stock the neb closet, and you would go home that day with your machine. If you only knew how little these things actually cost! $40!

Each and every insurance is different and each person's plan is different as well. Some people would never have to pay anything, while others have deductibles for durable medical equiptment and also co pays and co insurance. It also depends on how much money each insurance is charged. Not every insurance is billed the same dollar amount, which seemed unfair sometimes. But true.

So the dollar amount you were given was probably a deductible plus copay on top of it. They probably paid nothing.

DS got his through his pediatrician and it was billed through our insurance. This was a couple months ago, so I assume the costs were covered.

Although even if I had to pay for it, it would be worth it. We staved off one case of likely pneumonia and he was sounding pretty wheezy this week until I started the nebulizer, and he is sounding much better.

I had gotten one from the Dr and the insurance covered it toally, no copayment or anything..then when we were going away about 2 months later my Dr wrote a perscription for the portable one and the medical supply company delived it to my house the next day and again, no charge what so ever.

We have one, I think it was between $130 and $140. We paid for it up-front, but then were reimbursed by our insurance company.

I think our's was about $150 or so. The insurance we had when we got it had a $500 deductible at the time for durable goods but DD had surgery that year and we had paid our deductible so the dr prescribed one for her and insurance paid for it.

I would check with the home medical company you are getting it from and see if they can do a payment plan.

My daughter has one and our pediatrician just brought in into our exam room, showed us how to use it and we were not charged. Luckily, our insurance covered it.

Ours was prescribed. Somebody delivered it to our home. No cost to us.

our insurance covered the whole thing...we didn't pay anything. We got it when my son was 15 months and had his first asthma attack. we ended up in the ER in the middle of the night and after they got his breathing under control, they sent us home with a nebulizer and instructions for future use.

Mine was prescribed too. They gave it to me in the doctors office and I didn't pay anything at all for it. But somebody who has the same model as I do told me it costs about $125.
