My wife got an e-mail at work today that she has to travel for work the week that we were planning on going to WDW. We were staying off site at our timeshare and booked our air on southwest so we can get credit for canceling our flights so we are out no money, but it is hard to cancel with only 6 weeks before our trip.

It was our first trip with our DD(1). I was so looking forward to seeing her at WDW and how she will react with everything there and I have not been there in 18 months so I need a little WDW fix myself.

We have to look at the calendar and figure out when we can go

Didn't she already have in a request for vacation time? Maybe you are not losing anything on the flight, but you will have lost your timeshare week, which is valuable. Depending on her job, she should indicate the potential financial hardship of having to cancel the trip.

ITA! It seems a little ridiculous that your wife is being "forced" to cancel her family vacation, even after asking for the time off (I assume.)

i too am a little confused... i know as soon as we decide on a vacation my hubby & I put in for that time off....did she do that? and if so, than she needs to kindly remind them that she is off that week???? I guess we need more info!

:confused3

She has put in for time off several months ago and it was approved. The division of her company has a new boss about a month ago and everyone is a little uneasy about their jobs so she does not want to rock the boat and push the issue with her direct manager when the new boss called all of his employees to the home office.

We are just far enough out that we can cancel the time share without penalty. It is just that I was looking so forward to the trip and am a little disappointed that we can not go as planned. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

:surfweb: I totally agree with the others, if indeed your wife requested the vacation time off, I would kindly remind them about it, if they still insisted in that they needed her to travel for work, then they (her company) should have to reimburse you all for the lost timeshare expenses! :confused3 it's only right! Best of luck and hopefully you'll be able to go to WDW while Hannah is still 1. Have a Magical Day! pixiedust:

:thumbsup2 Okay, well then since the boat is alittle rocky, maybe they will allow her to take a vacation once she returns from the travel for work, since it had already been approved & everything purchased, and the timeshare will be willing to work with you as well! Again, best of luck!:dance3:

I think you guys are doing the right thing in cancelling the vacation - no matter what the disappointment factor. I also wouldn't be quick to take it soon after she is done.

In this economy, you DO NOT want to "stand up for your rights" and take the vacation, especially if there is a "new sheriff" in town. I had one of those restructurings - and believe you me, if you are a remote employee, your butt better be at that meeting and no words said, or they will go off and fine someone who will be. Tis the way of corporations these days. 8 months later, half of us were out of work - me because I designed the jobs they "restructured".

It's not "morally right", but life means you have to do what you have to do to survive.

I hope you are able to work it out so your family can take a WDW vacation. You will see it through your childs eyes and it will be magical.

How about seeing how many days she will have to be at the "home office" and, especially if this wil only be for one or two days, have her ask if they would be willing to pick up her air fare from Orlando instead of from Chicago? This way you will still have the vacation, except she would ned an "additional suitcase" for the business stuff and you will be on your own for that day or two.

so sorry you had to cancel.....

but you're right - i would never rock the boat either....
where i work they would definitely expect me to cancel a vacation for the 'good of the company' and to "be a team player" (the CEO actually told us that we should get up every morning, look in the mirror and say "what can i do for the company today".....and then he said we should go to sleep at night with our boots at the ready - like a fireman - ready to leap out of bed and go to work for hte company.......the guy's a bit much as you can imagine....)

No matter how tempting, never ask for policy exceptions when new management is around. Until you really get a feel for their directive, it could get you "labeled" as someone who's actions need to be "watched".

Once again, not morally right, but it's the way the game is played. (Can you tell I used to be a "remote office" employee?)

Sorry to hear you have to cancel and so close to your trip!

I agree with your decision though, assuming your wife WANTS to keep her job. Last Christmas I had our ds. I had a spring vacation planned and approved before my maternity leave. When I came back to work www had a new vp. My director tried to cancel my vacation saying it wouldn't look good. Unfortunately by the time he mentioned it we would have been in dvcs points holding window so I stood my ground. 3 months later I was laid off. To be honest I'm sure it would have happened anyway - they got rid of all remote employees in my dept- but I'm sure it didn't earn me any " team player " points either.

Luckily for me i Was ready to leave my job anyway but if the timing had been different I might be kicking myself for that trip.

Thanks for all the support.
We are planning a trip down in September. We can not come up with any dates that work between now and June and we really don't want to go in the summer so we will wait till it is a little cooler and crowds a little lighter.

Again thanks.
