Have they started those horrible x-ray body scan things yet?

If a car is coming at me....I side step it...I control it...where is the illusion..do you think everything is "pre-planned" I do not, sorry
The whole point is that you can't really control it. You may feel more in control and in fact - loss of control is the main reason people are afraid of flying.

From your argument - that must mean you are never a passenger in a car either.

We flew out of Dulles last Thursday (we're here in Disney now) and there was no body scan nor was there any pat downs going on. It was just like any other trip and we flew out of Dulles 6 times last year. Don't know about MCO since we fly out this Saturday.

The illusion is that you actually think you can side step a car coming at you. This is where the term "blink of an eye" comes into play. No way in heck are you side stepping a car coming at you at 50-60 mph. Or better yet, have you seen those test where the time drivers reaction time? Most drivers can avoid items with 10 sec warnings coming at them.

Seriously? You feel that you can avoid a car coming at you? If it's coming RIGHT at you? How do you know which way to go? If there is another car behind that one, so maybe you miss the first, do you miss the second? Or is that car that's coming the other way in fact in their lane, doing just fine until they think they see something in the road at the same time you are getting to the same point and they swerve your way? Or a bee buzzes them and they swerve right in front of you, like 20 feet. You honestly think you are in control and can avoid that? I dont think you mean to, but it seems as if you feel you cant get hurt in a car. But, my advice is the same for everyone. Whatever makes you feel most comfortable and gets you thru the day is what you have to go with. :thumbsup2

I guess I don't get it, if I have the ability to "alter the course of" a car/truck/donkey and "avoid" a collision with another car/truck/donkey whatever, how is that NOT control....I guess I don't see it.

I have taken this way OT, and for that I apologize

I would much, much rather fly than drive. Even with the risks of a bird hitting the engine, I'd rather fly. I have major, MAJOR anxiety about driving, especially on highways. Everything I see on the side of the road is a possible IED. Every car could (theoretically) be carrying a suicide bomber. No, I'm not paranoid. I have PTSD from being deployed. I really do feel safer in the skies than on the ground.

Do I think that the full body scan is a pancea for all of travel's risks? No. But, it may make one terrorist stop and think before they try to board with a weapon. If just one life is saved by this technology, I'll be content with it. We may never know if a full body scanner thwarts an attack, but I bet that there would be thousands of people upset if they didn't instal a scanner, and someone got by with an object that would have been deteted.

But that's the point..you don't always have that ability. There are going to be times when something is completely out of your control. Could be that crazy kid who is driving like a maniac behind you, the one who sideswipes a car that then smashed into you. It's behind you...you can't be looking behind and beside as well as in front.
I'm sure you're a very good driver. But you don't always have that ability to avoid...not 100% of the time. I worry much more about the other drivers out there. I know what my skill set is...theirs? Not so much.

Because you are relying somewhat on OTHERS to maintain control (be it a car, truck, donkey or rock falling off the side of a mountain, which means you dont have control of the situation :) If someone wanted to crash into you in your car, there would be nothing to stop them from doing it. Same way if someone really wants to take down a plane, they can, period end of story. It may take some time, they may have to have others help them, but if they want to do it bad enough, they can.

If you think are in total control......

I think I just have control issues.....locolala, thanks for your sacrifice, sorry about the PTSD, anxiety sucks, I hope you can get past it.

Whoaaa....not total control, never said that...just like my hands on the controls, I know where they've been...many years of motorcycles have taught me never to rely on the control/attention of other drivers. but how can one argue that I do not have more control of my destiny driving my car than I do strapped into a plane I am not flying...just dont get it....

I agree with that....100%

I dont want to get in trouble, but I will admit I agree with one part of this reply :goodvibes I just wont admit which part :)

:goodvibes No apologie snecessary, we always veer off course (LOL)

The simple answer is that, you would be correct if "your" car was the only variable in crashes. Most accidents are not so two dimensional. Speed, road conditions, driver conditions (both you and the other driver) weather, mechanical failure all are factors in the ability to avoid collisions. You can only "control" at most 2

Also if you simply go with probability. There's a bigger chance of you hitting another car than the probability of a pilot hitting another plane. I think the reason people fear the plane crashes more is because they are so catastrophic.

Thats my point exactly.....I at least control something when driving...I control nothing when I fly and cant get past that.....dont get me wrong I have flown...big time...like to guam...but I feel better in my car.
