Have the airports started those horrible x-ray body scan things yet? I am not liking this idea- those things are NOT good to walk through all the time! I don't care if someone sees me... in less than beautiful circumstances- heck with privacy! I'm more worried about the health factors!!

They say they're 'safe'... but I don't believe that. Is there anyway we can just be patted down if we don't want xrayed? I'll be the one holding up the line... sorry y'all!! :confused3:rolleyes1:snooty:;):lmao:

They are installed in Tampa and at least one DISer has reported having to go through it, but when I went through there no one was put in the scanner.

That said, DD13 had to have her bag explosive and drug tested since she had a bag of sand in it. That's right, she had to bring home some sand from the beach.... so she brings a gallon zip lock bag full of the stuff! TSA were super nice and knew what it was, but they had to check it anyway.

Most airports will let you get a pat down than the scanner.
Just a fyi, the radiation used in airport scanners are what is called "backbouncing or backscatter". Unlike in mammograms the X-rays used in full body scanners don't go "thru" your body instead hit your clothes and bounce back. Most medical imaging is higher dosage and goes through your body.

have no idea why I got double post.

If you're worried about health issues, don't fly, you're subjected to more radiation flying at 30,000 feet for 1 second then these machines produce during the entire imaging process.

Just my opinion ,,I would rather be scanned with a little radiation ,, then Blown Up,,,,,Im Just Sayin!

They were using them in Detroit when we flew out in December.

One of our travel party was selected for the addtional screening. She was given a laminated card explaining the scanner machine and her options. She was given the option to step in the scanner or to be hand screened.

They are in use at BWI. I was given the choice back in November. Personally, I preferred it to the pat down.

The recent case in Detroit, the terrorist had the explosives taped/sewn inside his underwear. Would that have been able to be detected by a pat down? Surely they don't grab your crotch to be able to feel it.

I went through the scanner at Tampa. They did not tell me what it was and did not give me an option to be patted down or hand screened. I thought I was just going to be "wanded" but realized what it was about half way through the scan.

There are a LOT of holes which need to be plugged in US security. This would not have stopped the 12/25 underwear fellow. Nor would a pat down.

It is an illusion of safety, not a reality of safety. I would like to see a lot of the big holes plugged in US airports before I will assume that I am being 'made safer'.

And not everyone can use the scanner, including those of us who are unable to manipulate our bodies in the required fashion.

Now don't go confusing them with facts.................

And I am not the only German who thinks this way!

Poorly Googletranslated article here http://translate.google.com/transla...iegel/vorab/0,1518,673569,00.html&sl=de&tl=en

Der Spiegel has had quite the interesting series of ariticles lately on the myth of airport security. I suspect however that most don't want me to post the text here. ;)

I guess I dont worry about the blown up part, I figure my chances are about as good to get blown up as winning the lottery or getting struck my lightning, or having a rhino run me over (I live in ohio so that should tell you the risk I'm at for that.

But I'd rather be scanned then felt up :)

I think one of the things we yanks, ;) suffer from is lack of patience. We like to fix thing instanteously and unfortunately this along with our other problems aren't so easy to fix and it's going to take a number of "tools" to fight back.

My take is simple: full body X rays are simply one layer of ways to fight terrorism. It is not the magic silver bullet and it shouldn't' be portrayed as one. In 5 years we may find out that some thing else is needed and hopefully we'll adapted. If it helps once, I'm cool with it.

Oh stop being logical!!! :)

I do question that those who think 'anything for safety' are at all concerned that many people every day are permitted into the sterile area at US airports without being screened, and that exits are not one way and are not always effectively guarded.

Those are two examples of two big holes which exist, and which are well-known these days. As we know, just being a member of a 'trusted' group doesn't mean that one doesn't have bad motives. LEOs and airline pilots have caused the deaths of others in recent years, and shouldn't be exempt from screening, for instance.

I had a funny (or sad depending on your view) experience with this same thing. During college I interned in the medical lab of a large hospital and every day the poor college students had to have their bags and pockets check to make sure we weren't stealing prescription drugs. Well all of us knew that the residents and first year interns were the biggest culprits because of the grueling schedules they are forced on but they were all exempted from bag checks. :confused3 Finally after about 4 years the local news station did a big "expose" on drug abuse among hospital doctors.

But I'd rather be scanned then felt up ...Had to chuckle at this one!:rotfl2:

And beware of the lurking rhino's!

I really dont want to take my chances on being blown up and well if ya gotta feel me up to make sure Im safe go for it!!....

Scanned ..x rayed....felt up...I JUST WANNA GET TO THE HAPPIEST PLACE ON EARTH IN ONE PIECE!...you guys make me smile!:upsidedow

This point cannot be repeated enough.

But will still get ignored. "Naked" pictures will be the next thing brought up as the "radiation" gets squished. Cant have "naked" pictures of my wife / mother / brother / sister / daughter / neighbor posted all over the internet!!! :rolleyes1
