Have the CM's ever actually stopped you from using refillable mugs from years ago?

Signage clearly limits free refills to the length of your current stay.

You already said it's OK to use old mugs and said the reason is because Disney doesn't pay for the coke syrup. If it's OK to take (steal is probably too strong a word, although it's accurate) soda using an old mug then it's equally OK to take soda using a paper cup or even 7-11 big gulp mug. Disney gets the syrup for free in either case.

I agree the "unoffical" policy is free soda for all but lets not pretend the type of cup a guest uses to grab free soda has anything to do with what's right or wrong.

Once a CM decides not to enforce Disney's rules they really don't have any business making up their own rules. Either they enforce the posted rules or they don't.

My last stay was at POP. I didn't see any non POP mugs being refilled and most of the mugs looked brand new. I suspect there are far fewer "soda theives" then one would expect from the threads on DIS, and other internet boards.

It makes sense that Cast Members stop guests from using non Disney mugs, so in that situation they were correct.

Whenever I would go to Friday night Pin Trading at the Contemporary I became friends with some of the locals and they would purchase food from the Food & Fun Center and get drinks in their own Contemporary mugs. Since they live in Orlando are they suppost to purchase a new mug everytime they would go there? I don't think so.

Actually I said WDW was right for stopping the guest who tried to fill up their Dunkin Donuts mug.

Earlier in this thread you gave us a reason why it's OK not to follow the posted rules:

Coca Cola gives them the Syrup for free, in return WDW advertises Coca Cola all around the parks and etc.

Disney gets the soda for free regardless of what kind of mug the "soda thief" uses, your points don't make any sense.

I don't agree with your point. The CM should either enforce the posted policy or not enforce the policy. There is no rule that says it's OK to use old mugs but not OK to use a 7-11 mug.

Maybe some guests thought the sign meant what it said and didn't bring back old mugs. Aren't those guests just entitled to "steal soda" as guests who brought back their old mugs?

I agree the CMs don't care about guests who ignore the posted signs and "steal soda". A guest who steals soda by bringing back an old mug isn't any more honest then a guest who steals soda by using a 7-11 mug or paper cup.

If you read the thread I am not the only one who has said how they bring back their old mugs, so there is no reason to always quote me.

What about guests who get refills on paper cups? (The WDW ones) A Cast Member at Gasparilla Grill & Games told us when we ask what the rule was, is that you are not suppost to get refills when purchasing a drink in the paper cups, however guests do that all the time. So would you not say that is also stealing?

You're the poster you mentioned Disney's free syrup as the reason why guests can use old mugs. You're the poster who said it's not OK to use non-Disney mugs. You're also the poster who complains when others don't follow rules (real or imagined) that bother you specifically parking at the Contemporary.

Again the posted rule is clear. The lack of enforcement is clear. I just can't understand why posters, including YOU, seem to think it's OK for guest to steal soda by using an old mug but it's not OK to steal soda by using a non-Disney mug.

Most places with self-service beverage dispensers allow complimentary refills. Unless there is a specific sign to the contrary I'd assume customers are free to refill paper cups during the same meal they purchased the drink. Customers who bring their paper cup back for a later meal are in the same category as guests who bring back old mugs. It's not allowed but the CMs don't really care.

Actually I am not the only one who mentioned about the syrup.

They went on to explain that the syrup for all fountain soda at Disney is provided by Coke on a promotional basis. That is to say that the deal that Coke has with Disney is 'we provide you syrup for free'.

Also I said it was wrong for anyone to use a non-Disney mug, so please don't put words in my mouth.

Basically what I've been told about the refillable mugs from CMs I know is this..

"People on the DIS are much more worried about mugs than Disney is.. "

They went on to explain that the syrup for all fountain soda at Disney is provided by Coke on a promotional basis. That is to say that the deal that Coke has with Disney is 'we provide you syrup for free'.

Now, having said that, I will still state the Disney policy when asked. But I think there's no reason to be militant about it. ;)

I suspected as much, but it is interesting to hear a CM's POV anyway. I know the arrangements with the big two soda companies often cost companies nothing or next to nothing, based on the advertising value of the venue, and I'm sure there are enough people like me who would buy the new mugs every trip for souvineir value (especially since they started offering travel style mugs - my coffee-loving DH can never have too many of those!) that Disney is still making plenty of money on the program.

The one time we stayed in a value (All Star Movie) people were filling everything but gas cans at the drinks. Never saw a CM say anything.

okay, the coke syrup is free.. is the water? (eta: or the electricity (source) to operate the soda fountain or the lights so you can see which button to press?)

and regardless, that's disney's business. just because they get something for free doesn't entitle you to that same discount either. it's called mark-up. those $500 shoes you buy cost the merchant well under $200. and they cost the manufacturer much less than that.

the reality is the rules are the rules. CMs are not going to enforce it. if you were them, how much would disney have to pay you to confront guests over something that trivial?

maybe if disney rewarded them for it.

we know heelys are banned, but we know some guests use them. we know smoking is limited to designated areas but some guests smoke wherever they feel like it.

we know CMs don't feel like confronting guests because it's usually not in their favor.

Also I said it was wrong for anyone to use a non-Disney mug, so please don't put words in my mouth.

He didn't put words into your mouth. He knows that you think it is wrong to steal with a non-disney mug.

What he is asking is, why do you think it is wrong to steal with a non-disney mug, but you think it is ok to steal with an older disney mug? Stealing is stealing.

Since I paid for the Disney mug I don't consider it stealing, plus I am always ordering food when using the mug so I am giving WDW more money at the food courts then the cost of a drink and the cost of the mug itself.

If you disagree with me then that is your view, however you also have to realize that I disagree when you say it's stealing when someone uses an old mug they paid for and etc. Because like I just said my family and I giving WDW back a lot more money when we spend it on tiems such as of Cheese Burgers, Chicken Strips, Pizza's, Chicken Caeasar Salads and etc while in the food courts.

It is not so much that I disagree with you, as I couldn't care less what you do. It is pretty much that Disney's policy disagrees with you.

The point is a person who uses a paper cup or 7-11 mug is also giving Disney money for burgers etc. That person is just as entitled to take soda as you are.

Interesting attitude. You don't get to make the rules. There is a posted sign. I can accept the fact that most CMs don't care. I can accept the fact that Disney may not really care.

You want to take "steal" soda. May not be a big deal BUT CUSTOMERS DON'T GET TO CREATE THEIR OWN SPECIALS.

Disney gives free soda refills to guests who purchase a refillable mug for the duration of their stay. They don't give free soda as part of special to guests who pay for food in the food court.

Lewisc,
This is going to be my last reply on this thread because no matter I say your always going to try and make me look like the bad guy. If it makes you feel better calling me someone who steals soda, which you are making me out to be a theif then go ahead. The facts are WDW does not care which you said yourself. CanadianGuy also said in this thread that the Cast Member he spoke to said people here on Disboards care more about this, then WDW Cast Members. So I am just at a loss for words by now and I hope that a mod will close this thread, because it's going no where.

You are the bad guy You insist it's OK for you to "steal" soda with an old mug while insisting it's not OK for another guest to use a 7-11 mug.

Take the time to READ my posts. I agree the CMs don't care. I agree Disney probably doesn't care.

I don't agree guests who take soda with old mugs are superior to guests who take soda with 7-11 mugs. I certainly don't agree the amount of money you spend at the food court has anything to do with your right to take free soda.
