Have medicine that needs refrigerated, requested fridge, will RP charge me?

When I stayed at RP in Aug of 2004 I had just a few vials of syringes that needed to be refrigerated. Since I had stayed before I planned on just throwing them in the min bar fridge. The front desk staff gave me a very hard time--long story, but they were rude in more ways than one and at first tried not to give me mini bar key because they thought for some reason I would "fill it up" weird.
Any way I made my ressies this time and requested a fridge--on the phone they told me it would be a $15 charge per day, but they may wave it when I get there. But the reservationist could not promise me that---
I do not travel much, and therefore rarely ned to travel with my meds, so is this required under the disablity act?

Wierd - I know Disney will provide one free of charge for medications even if the resort does not regularly have fridges. Many times I request the mini bar be emptied prior to us arriving as I like to fill it with my own stuff - ie: pop, water, beer. I would send an e-mail to Loews hotel and get it sorted out in writing.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think it is covered under the disability act (as is hotels providing a smoke-free room upon request for my asthmatic son). Most good hotels provide one free of charge when there is a medical need for a fridge. I would call back, and ask for a manager and bring up the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) if needed.

I'd suggest you ask your question on the DISabilities board. There are lots of wonderful people who have similiar issues. I'm sure they'd have advice.

I tell everyone to visit Publix before checkin and stock a cooler. Why bother if you think they'll give you a hard time? Bring zip lock bags to put your meds in. That will keep them dry from the ice water. Then you save money on drinks and snacks.

This is great advice for those who really only need a fridge for snacks. But, for medicine, if they are entitled to no additional or minor cost modifications under the law, why would someone not try to assert their rights? People with disabilities have to put up with a lot, that is why the law is there, to protect them from discrimination, and to make life a little more bearable.

It really isn't a good idea to keep your medicine in an ice bucket. You can not regulate the temperature & run the rise of freezing. You will find most places will not charge you for the fridge- once they realize that is REALLY for medical reasons.

I had a similar problem the year before last. I had meds that needed to be refrigerated, they gave me grief about charging me but finally did concede to giving me one gratis. When I got there the fridge didn't work. I had to put my medication in the hotel fridge (given to check in clerk at front desk). Last year it was no problem because we did Disney first and my meds are only once a week. So, it worked out okay. I've decided to do Universal after Disney and that way I don't have to worry about medication and refrigeration issues.
