How are the kennels at DL?
We usually only go for about 5 hours because we have AP's. I used to be able to leave my dogs at home alone but now I can't. One of my little doggies died on Sat. 17th. Her name was Flower (from Bambi). Now my other dog Buddy Good Boy cannot stand to be alone and I cant stand to be far from him , especially right now. so I thought if we ever went to DL I would just take him with us, as he loves the car , he loves other dogs and he loves people. I just wonder if he would like the kennel.
I really hate being in the house right now. We have gone to the dog park everyday since it happened. On Dfi's day off, he wants to go to DL and of course so do I. just a change of scenery. we may be the only 2 sad faces there but we can only go if Buddy goes to a kennel. We would opt for the doggy k9 camp down the street but we wouldnt be able to pick him up until the next day because of their hours.we couldnt pick him up at say 11 pm. I dont want to leave him there over night.
Any opinions on the DL kennels out there?
Thanks.

I don't know anything about the DL kennel, but I wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear about your dog Flower. :grouphug: We got our first dog last summer (Dory, from Finding Nemo), and I already know how sad we'd be if something happened to her. I'm sure it is tough for you. I am thinking of you and hoping you can have a great trip to DL this week!

Thank you very much. That means a lot. Yeah, she was a special little girl.
I am just thankful it happened very very fast. Within hours. Give Dory a big kiss for me.

Definitely sorry to hear about your loss.

I'm not familiar with kennels in the area but I've noticed a few of the chain stores opening up pet hotels. I think Petco has these locally and some locations are open until 10 or later. Might be worth calling and see if they can take them for a few hours.

Thank you for your kind words. She will be missed.

I have checked the Petco Hotels but they have breed restrictions. Buddy Good boy is a Rottweiller. He is the most friendly sweet kind fat lazy couch hog you will ever meet. Unfortunately his breed has a bad reputation because of abusive owners.
The Petco Hotels look amazing though. Really good clean and friendly looking. If I had a non restricted breed I would defineatly use them.

Don't know anything about the kennels but wanted to say sorry about Flower. :grouphug: It is so hard when our animals leave us behind! It just takes time to get used to them being gone.

Just adding a sorry about your dog and . . . I don't know how the kennels are personally but I do know they encourage you to come visit through out the day.

Thank you Lisa. It is very hard. I am just thankful that I still have Buddy. The thing with Flower is that it came out of the blue. She had a stroke Sat. evening and died with in an hour . I still cant believe it. I would be as surprised if I came home and my roof was gone. I mean it really feels surreal. very hard.
If it wasnt raining today we would be at the dog park.

Thank you , very kind of you to say.
I just have to say how much I love this board right now.
I really want to thank you all for your kind words. It really makes me feel cared about.
Very kind.

I gave Dory a big hug and kiss for you! I know sometimes the all-of-a-suddenness is hard for us, but it is a blessing she didn't have to suffer long.

Aww, I am soooo very sorry to hear about your loss. My Zorro is my child, my buddy, my angel. He is family and I cannot imagine the sorrow you are going through right now. :grouphug:

The kennels at Disneyland are exactly that - kennels. They have cages for each dog and they stay in there while you are gone.

Everything from here forward is as of a few months ago when friends of ours left their dog at the Disneyland kennel. Please call and ask 1,000 questions to make sure you will be happy, as I totally understand the connection with a dog. For what it's worth, here's how things were a few months ago:

They have a policy where the CMs do NOT physically interact with your dog (i.e. take them out for walks, potty, anything - probably for liability reasons???). You come back to your precious little one whenever and as often as you want to play, walk, whatever. They have a play area and the kennel area is air-conditioned (at least it used to be).

It was $20/day and you have to pick up your dog by park closing. I know they require that you bring proof of rabies vac. and a few other vacs. Not sure what they are. Call and ask so you have everything you need. They will NOT take your little one without these.

The $20 used to include food, but you can bring your own if you want. They also used to allow blankets, toys, whatever. Again, call and ask. If you don't want to leave your boy at home and want to be able to visit with him throughout the day, it's probably just what you are looking for.

I am so very sorry about your loss and know that it will take a long time for your heart to heal as dogs truly are family, but hopefully your memories (and Buddy Good Boy) can help you through this tough time.

Oh my goodness, such a sudden event is shocking but it doesn't make it any less sad. I lost my dog two years ago and I still miss her. I got her when I was a teenager and she was my first baby. I cried for weeks. I am sorry you are dealing with that loss right now.

As for the kennel dreams gave you good info. I haven't used it but from what I have heard from my neighbor who has is that it is just a kennel, a cage. They dont run free or get played with. You can visit as you like though. I always feel awful when we are on the train at mainstreet station and hear puppies barking :(

I don't even think they are cages, they are just crates. Our dogs are crate trained but I wouldn't even think to leave them crated while we were in DL. Do they either go to our trusted kennel or they stay with friends while we are gone. But we are gone for days not hours like you guys are lucky enough to be. :) I think leaving Buddy Good Boy home would be better for him, he'd be happier at home then crated and not played with at all. He will put into the box and left there until you come back for him. Not very fun for doggies. :( They don't play with them, the dogs don't get to interact with each other either. It's just not the place I envision my furbabies being while we are in DL.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's so hard when we lose our furbabies, whether we expect it or not. (((HUGS))) to you, your DF and Buddy Good Boy.

Thanks again to everyone who left me such nice messages. I just feel like I am in a fog.
We got her remains yesterday. It came in a very nice little box.
I think Ill be leaving Buddy Good Boy at the K9 kennel. Even though he sleeps like 23 hours a day I dont think he would dig being in a crate for 5 hours on and off.
Or I guess Ill find a baby sitter for him.
I do so appreciate the info Dreams , thank you.
Oh heck I dont know what I am going to do. I will stay home until I can decide.
Im lucky that I work at home.
Arghhh this sucks. Im glad I can get a little Disney plug in here. It takes my brain off of what happened.
Thanks everyone.
Hugs~

Hi Corpebride,

I don't know how long of a drive you are from DL, but here's a thought for you.

You will notice that I only gave info, but did not suggest whether you should use the kennel or not as that is a decision that only you can make - as you know what you are okay with and what your little boy will be okay with.

However, from your above post, it is clear that you are really torn. It sounds like you really want your Disney fix, but so don't want to leave your boy.

Here is a suggestion (and it is ONLY a suggestion, as you need to do what is right for you and your boy):

How about going to Disneyland with him. Check out the kennel. Meet the staff, and if you feel okay about it, leave him for 2 hours. Go enjoy a walk up Main Street and maybe a few of your favorite DL things (rides, a show, shops, walks, whatever you love most). Then go back to him and possibly call it a day. He will have had a trial experience, you will have gotten a (seemingly much-needed) Disneyland visit, and you will not be feeling guilty about leaving him for very long.

Yes, there's the drive and the cost for such a short time, but I always believe in a trial test anything when it comes to our little Zorro. The first time we went away for more than 24 hours without him, he stayed with friends. We left him for 1 night while we were still in town and a 30 minute drive away as a test overnight 24 hours before we left. Was it a pain? Yes. Did we have time for it? No. Did it make leaving him for a week MUCH easier? Yes!!! (He knew our friends, their house, had been there, and we knew he was going to be okay - the most important piece of it all.)

Just a thought. You need to do what is best for you and your Buddy,
Dreams

That is such a simple solution.
The drive isnt long. from Culver City to DL during the mid day drive isnt long at all . say 45 minutes at the most.
that is so brilliant and simple. I think we will be giving that a shot.
Thank you.

My FIL has left his dog in the kennel at DL before. She was there for several hours at a time. He LOVES his pup and is very picky about where he leaves her. I didn't hear any complaints from him about the kennel and she seemed to be fine there. FWIW

Sorry about your beloved dog. ((((HUGS))))

Thank you very much.
I also appreciate your info about the kennel.
Dfi really wants to go this Sunday. So we will see.
I appreciate your input.

Be sure to call and find out exactly what documents you need to show. I know there is more than just rabies.

Glad I could help think it through,
Dreams

I'm sure it's just the standard vaccinations, whatever you need to show at a standard kennel. Bordetella, Rabies, DHLPP........
