We booked two rooms for November, one for me and DH, other for sister and her hubby. I had to use 29 pts. from 2000 year, 170 pts from 2001 year and borrow some pts from 2002 year. The problem is I did this reservations before I actually received my manual. I thought I thoroughly understood the terms of cancellation, only to find out that it's not the case for borrowed pts. from future years. So now I find out that if my sister and her hubby don't go I need to use those borrowed pts from the 2002 year by the end of 2001 year. Which won't be happening because I'm already going November 2001.

First off, I'm a little annoyed that the CM didn't clarify this point or mention it to me before I actually borrowed ahead. But that's not what I'm writing about.

I need to figure out what to do with those extra pts if my sis doesn't go. Right now me and DH are in a 1 bedroom at OKW. I thought of possibly changing hotels and staying at maybe GF. And try to use up the total of 369 pts that me and my sis originally were going to use. So my question is....any suggestion on what hotel to switch to? Or should we stay at OKW in 1 bed? Maybe Animal Kingdom Lodge? Also can you get different types of rooms? I don't mean different views but actually different sizes?? Like a really big room at YC? or a regular size room at GF????

I'm sooooooo confused. Any suggestions???

November 2001 is far enough off that you might try this...I am assuming that the points need to be used, this is not and probably will not work as a stand by plan.....call MS, see if you can allocate the borrowed and banked points for the November saty, if yes, problem solved.

If no, check on availibilty at that time, there probaly is at OKW, if there is, then cancel your reservation, the points allocated for it go right back into your account as if they had never been used. Now make the exact same reservation again making sure you specify that the banked and borrowed points should be used first...they usually do that anyway.

If this is a contigency plan for just in case she cancels, you have to be aware that there are restriction on the use of points in the "World of Disney" hotels plan. You can NOT make a reservation during the last 60 days of your use year....you can make a reservation for during that period, but you can't make it during that period....Disney needs a chance to do something with your points to get value from them.

I am sorry no-one answered you earlier....

Figaro, if your sister & her family are unable to join you in November, perhaps you can ask someone else to join you - other family members, friends, etc.

Hmmmmm....I'm getting confused... What do you mean by allocate?? Put this into more simpler terms for me please.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure about this, but you might want to verify with your manual, or better yet, a DVC CM.
If you cancel within the 6 month time limit of your use year, you can bank your 170 pts. from 2001 and go ahead and use your 170pts. you borrowed from 2002. This way you only have to use 199 points this year, and next year use your banked 2001 pts. first, then your 2002 point.
Get it? Can anyone else verify this?

I am sorry, I am running out the door, I will be clearer when I get back, unless someone, like maybe PamOKW with her expert understanding, explains first....

I agree with above. Just call MS, and make sure that all the banked and borrowed points are allocated to the reservation that you definitely will NOT cancel. Use current year points on the ressie that you might cancel. Then you have up to the 6 month window to cancel the other ressie if necessary, and still be able to bank the points.

Oops. Just reread this, and I guess the unkown factor is what month your use year is. That would have a bearing.

My use year starts in September.

Yeah I think I get it. I should use the 136 pts borrowed from 2002 first, then the borrowed 29pts from 2000, then use how many extra pts I need from 2001 year and bank the rest of that year till 2002. However, we're not planning on going again till 2003. That's another problem. Any suggestions on the hotel rooms??

What month is your use year and when do you think you would know for sure if your sister can't go?

I'm thinking you must use your banked and borrowed points this year. But, you can bank your current years points into next year. It seems a little wacky but basically, you would use last years and next years points this year, and use this years points next year. The only kicker would be next year you would have to use those point, as they couldn't be banked again.

This would all depend on your use year and banking percentage guidelines.

My use year is September. I told my sis that she has to let me know by April/May. Any suggestions?

Ok - Is this correct?

Right now you have your 29 points available from September 2000 which I assume you are going to bank into your September 2001 use year.

In September 2001, you get your full allotment of 170.

Then, you are going to borrow however many points from September 2002 to complete the transaction.

The points you bank and the points you borrow must be used between September 1, 2001 and August 31, 2002. So, if sis cancels, use those points towards your trip and bank your 2001 points into 2002. Follow your banking guidelines depending on how many points you need to bank.

You mentioned you weren't planning on going back until 2003. The points you banks would be good from September 2002 until August 31, 2003. So, you would have to plan that 2003 trip in the first 8 months of the year.

Does this seem right? Anybody care to add to this?

Jenn

Yeah that is correct.

I thought however, that when the rules stated if I borrowed pts from 2002 year that I need to use them by the end of the year 2001. (The year in which I borrowed to use them in) So when they mean year.....they mean my USE year?? So I should have until August 2002 to use those borrowed 2002 pts? Is this right??

(I'm beginning to feel like you need to be Einstein to figure this all out) LOL !!!

Yes, they mean use year not calendar year. You have until the end of August 2002 to use any points not used in November 2001.

If your sister backs out and you need to cancel a reservation make sure MS uses the banked (from 2000) points then the borrowed (from 2002) points first. If MS returns the current years points back into your account you can turn around and bank them into 2002 since the deadline isn't until February.

Hope that made sense. :)

Does anybody have any ideas on using the points for other hotels?? Maybe getting a few days a AKL and the rest at Boardwalk.. Or GF?? Or YC??

If I don't go with the other suggestion...I'll be needing to use up 335 pts for the week of November 23 - December 1, 2001.

This is a completely different idea. You could check at your office or with your friends to see if anyone would be interesting in "renting" those points from you. We did this once and the rate was $10.00/point--so a ressie of 120 points would bring you $1200.00. You'd make the reservation in your friends name and they'd save a lot of money compared to what they'd normally pay. We had to do this once when we purchased a resale which came with lots of extra points we couldn't use. We didn't want to lose them, so we rented. Now everyone in my hubby's office is constantly asking when we'll have "extra points" again (probably never!! LOL!!) because they loved DVC so much. This is really a last ditch thing to do but it is a possibility if none of the other suggestions works for you. Hopefully, you sister will not back out on you!! We will be at OKW from Nov. 17th to the 26th. Maybe we will see you there.

I may be late with my answer but here goes. I had the same question a few years ago. I had quite a few borrowed points used on a trade to Washington. I asked if I had to cancel what could I do. I was told I could use them at a Disney hotel that needed more points, like the Grand Floridian. At least that way I would not lose them.
