2 reservations same week 2 different resorts. Not getting rid of either reservation. Do I need to do a variation of main name because of the 2 reservations so they can check in to the 2nd resort and back to the 1st resort later.

Doing so will reduce your potential problems.

Two different MDE accounts would solve this problem. I actually have overlapping reservations for an upcoming stay because I want to arrive to a room that is ready at 9 AM and be able to have use of that room all day. I have a second MDE account and linked the 2-night reservation to that account. The guest names are all the same on both reservations. The only difference is that the MDE accounts are separate, so as far as Disney's computers are concerned, we are different people.

Your solution should work as well.

The other issue is is the the Magic Bands won't work on both rooms at the same time. Without knowing the dates and other specifics it's difficult to know for certain the best approach but I'm wondering if having part of the group on one and the rest on the other might be the best options and if so, it gives some dining plan options that might be very advantageous.
