I had read somewhere, either here or on Doombuggies.com, that the Haunted Mansion exterior was based in part on the Harry Packer mansion in Jim Thorpe, PA.

Since we live fairly close, the last weekend in March we decided to go check it out.

Jim Thorpe is a charming little town and the two mansions there are something to behold.

We found the exterior of the home to be sufficiently creepy. It is now a Bed and Breakfast, so perhaps we will have to stay there someday to get a peek at the interior. I hear from a friend that the Victorian furnishings are wonderful.

Anyone think it resembles the Haunted Mansion?

That's pretty cool. The town Jim Thrope is a great little town. Anyone that even lives close to it should check it out.

The 2nd pic looks similar...but then again I haven't been to Disney in a year...I'll take a look in a week and a half:hyper:

Maybe it's me but I do not think it resembles the HM at all. I thought the one at WDW was based on several different mansion along the Hudson River(?) in upstate New York.

Liz,

Thanks for the pics:D A few years ago a friend and I took a tour of the inside and it was pretty neat. Now I know what a tete-a-tete chair is and other interesting facts - lol! I couldn't remember what exactly it looked like on the outside, so it's really neat to see it and the HM right next to each other to compare:D

I've heard that said, too, but I never really got the connection. It does look like something that wouldn't be too out of place on Main Street, or in New Orleans Square perhaps, but not really the HM at WDW. I've seen some pics of the inside, and they do have that creepy Victorian charm that the mansions are well known for. Actually the pic on one of the sites where it shows the stairs gives it a closer look to Phantom Manor.

Thank you for posting neighbor,we are DVC also we own at OKW since 1992.:wave2:

I have read the same information regarding the Harry Packer Mansion as the basis for HM. They even have murder mystery weekends there! If I am not mistaken, they also have website.

It was inspired by both the lower Hudson River Valley, or the Sleepy Hollow, Headless Horseman type of surrondings.

Also; the house drew inspiration from the Harry Packer Mansion in Jim Thorpe, PA, a gothic house built in 1874.

I found this info in a book purchased at WDW in December, "The Haunted Mansion, From the Magic Kingdom to the Movie". Really neat book has alot of details about all thing dealing with "The Haunted Mansions"
