Haunted Carriage Rides at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground offer thrills during this Halloween season without being too scary for most kids to enjoy.

We began our adventure Friday, the opening night, at the Blacksmith’s Shop. After checking in, we were encouraged to walk around and see the horses and memorabilia in the barn. When it was our turn, we climbed into one of four open carriages and headed out past Pioneer Hall and the Settlement Trading Post and into the woods.

The driver started the telling of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” before a recorded narrator picked up the tale, as the carriages traveled through the trees and along the shore of Bay Lake, stopping at key places mentioned in the story.

For my children, ages 7 and 9, there was nervous anticipation leading up to the appearance of the headless horseman. But there was no fear on the 25-minute ride. This is Walt Disney World, after all. Be aware, however, that the woods can be dark, depending on what time your ride occurs, and that can certainly affect small children.

If your teenager is looking for things that go bump in the night, it won’t happen on the Haunted Carriage Ride. For that, you’ll need to check out Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios.

Disney’s Haunted Carriage Rides continue daily through Oct. 31, leaving on the half hour from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $60 per carriage, which holds four adults or two adults and three children. Call 407-939-7529 to make a reservation.

A tip: Many of the days are already sold out, but cast members told me they will take names for waiting lists because additional rides may be scheduled on busy nights. Those on the waiting lists will be notified by 4 p.m. the day of the ride.

We are booked for 10/28. We have 2 adults and 3 kids ages 11, 9, and 5 (just barely on the 16th). The thing is Grandma is also on the trip. Our ride is set for 10pm so we may have Grandma take the 5 year old back to the cabin for the night, but just curious if they would even let 6 go if we tried. I HATE to leave Grandma out if DD5 wants to go.

PSHHHHH. I have been trying to get reservations for months for the haunted carriage ride and I can't!!!! I will be up there at the end of the month and I call every single day and ask and they keep telling me that they are booked! I go up to the cabins every year for the past 6 years and this will be the first year that I haven't been able to get resevrations for the carrage ride :'(

$60!!!!! Holy cow!!! There is no way I would pay that much money!! Obviously I'm in the minority judging by the full bookings, but geesh! I think I will put my husband on his bike and have him ride through the campsite with a plastic jack-o-lantern on his head and save the money for smores!

Any reports on how much fun or not this has been this year? I've either missed them or noone is posting about them! We have one booked, and I'm curious how strict they are on # of people. I think we were originally told 4 adults or 2A/3k, right? But we also have grandma and the kids are 11, 9, and 5, so the 5yo could sit in one of our laps. Grandma has offered to sit out if she can't go, but it would be nice to include her if they are good about it. Thanks!

I just saw a report with Pictures on another thread (Resort Board?) - just run a search, it was recent and the group had a very good time.

I did the Haunted Carriage ride on 10/4 and it was awesome! It was my first time to the campground, and I really loved it, and the carriage ride was so much fun, I love hearing the story and seeing all the creepy things they have set up, and the Headless Horseman great! I definitely would LOVE to do it again! :thumbsup2

We just got home last night.

We went on the Haunted Carriage Ride... It was fun! I was surprised, actually, how cool it was. Heck, just a horse drawn carriage ride around the Settlement was neat! They do not go overboard with special effects, so for kids it is creepy but fine. The story is well done, with some changes to include Crocket's Tavern and the campground area / buildings. Honestly, they built up the suspense pretty well for when the horseman comes out... probably 4 or 5 times I thought we'd see him before we actually did. Nothing like having a real horse come charging out of the woods at you!

A little pricey? I guess yes. But definitely worth it as a one time thing if nothing else.

You know, I swear I saw an extra large 3 bench seat carriage that could hold 6+ people, but it may be used for something else, so certainly ask! It is Disney, they seem to just get things done.

Hmmm you're complaining about $60, but are willing to pay upwards of $110 a night for a $40 campsite during the holiday season or 3 times the cost of food over a normal restaruant. :confused3 ... YES Disney is expensive, but the carriage ride is a bargain compared to the one day cost of a park admission.

IMHO the haunted carriage ride is a must do experience and is really worth the cost as it's really done well.

fyi--- They did allow us to have 3 adults/3 kids. We all fit just fine. We tipped the driver for letting Grandma go! :) We had a fabulous time on the 10/28 haunted carriage ride!!! Kids loved it; especially since I was the only one who got scared! LOL Our driver used her whip to rustle the limbs on a tree by me and it made me jump out of my seat!!!
