Hattiesburg MS Questions

Hattiesburg will be our first of two overnight stops on our drive to WDW. Any Mississippians or others out there who can tell me what hotels are the best? Not looking for a Hilton, just a nice clean place in a good part of town with a pool. Anything interesting for a 5 yr old and 9 yr old to do in town?

Having spent several weeks in Hattiesburg on Business I vote for the Hawthorn Suites. It was the nicest I saw. (They had both an indoor and outdoor pool which would be nice if the weather was bad or it was winter.)

The Hampton Inn was OK also.

We stayed in Comfort Suites ($70 or so) by the Turtle Creek Mall. It had a heated indoor pool & free breakfast.

All the hotels are pretty new in the Turtle Creek Mall area, plus there are plenty of stores, restaurants & a movie theater nearby.

For kids, Hattiesburg has a nice little FREE zoo, Kamper Park, that can be fun. We went there and my kids enjoyed riding the train and carousel for $2 each. And it's free to tour the zoo part. It's on Hardy Street, a mile or two from hotels.
