hats.

ya to me, by not taking a hat off i'm not doing it as a sign of disrespect, i'm not consciously being like 'i'm not taking my hat off cuz i don't respect my country HA!' i think standing for the national anthem is respectful and that tradition i get, standing is a sign of respect, not standing is a sign of disrespect.
to me, not taking a hat off is not a sign of disrespect, it's not a sign of anything.

if that makes any sense. my point if that if i dont take my hat off its not because i'm consciously thinking 'im doing this because i dont respect my country/flag/national anthem', i think by standing, facing the flag and singing, i'm showing my respect.

Why does that make me (or people like me) narrowminded and selfish? If I did it just because other people do it, that would mean I was being fake and lying to myself and others. How is that better than following my mind and beliefs?

I never stated you specifically. I'm saying when you ignore something because it doesn't mean anything to you is ignorant. Like, if you don't believe in standing and taking your hat off for the pledge or anthem, politely excuse yourself and come back when it's over. If you come to a setting where something is commonplace and you refuse that something, then you should expect to be ostracized.

I have a question..since we are questioning hats...why are mens formal wear a suit and tie and womens formal is a dress? What makes it so much more formal than black t-shirt and jeans. It is the same reason why hats are necessary to take off.

How is that ignorant? I'm educated in the fact of why the tradition was started and I understand why a lot of people do it.

Why should I excuse myself? I love this country and I will proudly put my hand on my heart and pledge my allegiance. So just because I don't take my hat off, I shouldn't be allowed to do that in public?

Like I've said many many many times before, doing something just because that's the way it's always been done is just not something I believe in or do. Otherwise it's just artificial.

Ignoring something because you don't believe in it IS ignorant. If you don't like something, the least you can do is acknowledge it but refuse it. Take the gay lesbian rights issue for example. If I were to totally ignore gays and lesbians pleads for rights, that's ignorant. If I were to acknowledge their rights but still refuse under the guise of religion, that's not ignorant.

If you don't believe in something that is commonplace at the location you're at, you can leave and not offend anyone, or you can stay and offend everyone. That's just the way I look at it. I, personally, wouldn't want to offend anyone when it comes to the military, but some people don't. So whatever. Obviously you and I don't agree so there's no point in talking about this any more. :goodvibes :flower3:

I just don't get why people don't believe in it because it's "outdated". You know what's outdated? Religion, the concept of paper money, etc etc. These are all "out dated", yet everyone still uses them. I don't get why you can't show respect for two minutes of your day to show RESPECT for those who guard YOUR life! You're gonna have to give me a better excuse than outdated.

ITA. If I wore hats, I'd take it off. I believe it is a sign of respect. It's like how in some places in Asia it is respectful to take off your shoes. That doesn't mean anything to me but I'd still take of my shoes as a sign on respect to a culture.

This is kind of off topic, but I get hell bent when people show disrespect during the nation anthem. It is not okay to talk during it!

Women have never been expected to take off their hats. They're part of our outfits. We don't take off our hats when we walk into church, when the national anthem is played, etc.

Why? Why does taking a hat off show respect? Why does everyone have to do it? Why is it anymore respectful than volunteering at a veterans hospital, saying thank you whenever you see a soldier and having a conversation with them, putting your hand on your heart during the pledge, etc. These are things that mean something real and symbolize patriotism to me.

I don't blindly follow or believe in anything. I have to know why I'm doing something, and it has to mean something to me.

You take your hat off in church. You take your hat off at a nice restaurant.

When a guy I brought home wouldn't take off their hat when they met and were talking to my dad, that would be a total turn off to me.

It's just rude IMO.

It's like in all the old westerns. Anytime a man would meet a lady they liked or were attracted too, they'd always take off their cowboy hats. It's just respectful to anyone. Not just the anthem.

hats aren't "supposed" to be worn in church either. i don't really understand the tradition.

If I was sitting in church and saw a guy with their hat still on. My mouth would drop. That would be one of the rudest things ever.

That would never fly by in my church anyways.

But if someone decides to wear a hat to church. At least have enough respect for God to take off your hat when praying or during prayer.

Taking your hat off started in the Middle Ages. Well, then it was a cover. Hats and covers signified dominance. When you removed the hat, it meant subservience to something superior. When you take your hat off during the anthem, it means you are respecting and grateful for how the nation has kept you safe. When you take a hat off in a church, it means you are bowing down to God and his power. This is also how you got the phrase "my hat's off to him".

No one's blindly following anything, this is legit.

:thumbsup2

I'm not saying everyone follows it blindly, I'm saying since it doesn't mean anything to ME, if I followed it then I would be following it for no reason.

Hopefully, no one is that selfish.

It's a well known opinion that taking off your hat during the Anthem is a sign of respect.

If it doesn't mean anything to you, do like someone's said before on this thread. If you don't want to take off your hat at least go to the bathroom or go somewhere.

It can go as simple as going into someone's house when they do things differently. Like... they say prayer before dinner. If your family doesn't do that, then you can either politely excuse yourself and go to the next room, or you can join in, just because it's what THEY do, evem though it means nothing to you. Like the Anthem, prayer only last a minute or two of your 24 hour day. Is that minute or two really going to hurt you that bad.

Exactly.

ALL that said. I wasn't trying to single anyone out. Everyone has their own opinions. That was what this thread was about, for everyones opinions.
