I remember that too! I have one hat with my real name on it, and another hat that I got embroidered as sort of an inside joke when i was there with two friends in October of 2001. We were there for a 'Horatio Hornblower' fandom convention (HH was an A&E miniseries that had a fan following, and we all got together in Tampa that year - the three of us went to the Magic Kingdom as a side trip). We each got hats that read Horatio, Archie, and Bush respectively - I still have the 'Archie' hat. The cast member who did the embroidery didn't bat an eye. It probably wasn't the weirdest request he'd ever gotten!
Many moons ago I worked in Fantasy Faire. Our shop would sew the names on the hats. We had a sewing machine that we would use. I never perfected the art but my fellow cast members did a swell job. I heard now it is not a sewing machine but more of a computer machine that does it.
re the embroidery options. 3 maybe 4 years ago my brother got a personalised towl from Adrian and Ediths in HS with a pirate micky on it with his name embroided. Does anyone know if this service is still available or is it just hats they do now?

Hand operated machine - the CM feeds the hat under the sewing needle effectively writing the name on the hat themselves
Computer operated machine - the CM sets the hat in the machine, probably types in the name, pushes a button and the computer does it all
I'm asking about the hand operated machine. We had this done at Le Chapeau (sp?) on Main Street probably about 10 years ago. I'm wondering if it is still done there or anywhere.
I remember when we had it done, we were like "OMG! You're doing that by hand! That's amazing!" I think that many probably don't realize what kind of skill is involved in that.
Yep, We used to explain to the guests that it had to be a name not nickname. Disney didn't want to even go there since some nicknames were not appropriate for a family park. If a cast member did one then where is the line drawn? I can just imagine what people would be asking us to write on the hats.

Yes, the hand operated machine was the way that hats were done for many years. The cast member had to practice since you were to guide the machine with your hand. After I left I heard that it was all being done with the computer machine. I guess doing it that way moves things along faster (we used to have lines going out of the store) and mostly every person can use the computer machine. (We had to be sure that there was someone that could sew in the store at all times.)
I haven't seen how the computer ones come out but I loved the ones that came out with the sewing machine.
