Has your home had radon?

We are thinking of making an offer on a 10 yr. old home that has been vacant for a year. It has a radon system in it that vents the radon out, but the system has not been in use for a year. We just had the radon test done(w/o the system on) and the readings were 12.8 in the unfinished basement and 5.1 on the first floor. Everything I read says it will be safe if the problem is fixed and the radon is vented out. Any experience or advice? BTW, we probably cannot turn the system on and check it again. The house is a foreclosure and will be auctioned off in a few weeks if we don't buy it. The house is really nice and we had it inspected already (there are no contingencies once the offer is accepted).

I can tell you about my minor experience with radon.
A house I owned previously had a radon vent in it.
The house was brand new when we bought it. We had
the radon test done just as routine. The levels came back
slightly high so we required the builder to put the vent in.
The levels came back well within acceptable after that and for the
2 years I owned it after that. The radon was attributed to the
crushed stone which was put down before the foundation was
poured. I was assured by several experts that the vent was
the acceptable repair. Never had a problem with the vent and
the house was sold without any problems also.

We bought our last house with a radon system in place. We tested it and the levels where within normal range. When we sold it years later, the new people didn't even test the numbers. We gave them our paperwork and that was good enough for them. From what I understand as long as the vents are working you are fine.
