.....Gone from being really heavy to being really toned up at ages 39 or above? Is it possible? I can tell after nine months of doing the Firm that I have muscle, but it still seems to be covered by a layer of cottage cheese. I am just wondering if it is possible or have I waited too long to get into shape. If you have accomplished this, can you tell me what diet you used and what your exercise program was? Any pictures would be encouraging too! Thanks so much. :)

You can do it! I am not 39 yet, but my aunt decided to lose weight and get in shape when she was 39. I think she lost about 40 pounds by her 40th. She then lost some more - maybe 10 or so. Anyway, it has been 2 years and she still looks great. She did Weight Watchers, walked, and some yoga. Best of luck!

Hi Angie2B! First of all, great work! Never give up... It's important to do a few things. Exercise is wonderful but it needs to be balanced and it needs to increase in intensity or movement the stronger you get to keep your muscles challenged. You need to make sure you do both cardio work and strength work. The cardio work will actually help you burn the fat, while strength work will allow you to build muscle (which will also increase your metabolism and help to burn fat). Change up your routines to whatever suits you, but vary them. This ensures you work different muscles on different days.

Also make sure you watch your diet. (Sucks getting old, doesn't it? I'm 39 so I know what you're going through.)

Thank you for your words of encouragement! I have been stalled around 176-178 and getting discouraged.

QTpooh- Do you know anything about the Cathe DVD's? I saw a boxed set (at Target) of her stuff that included a step, stretchy band, balance ball, and 3 DVD's.I was wondering if she adds more cardio to her workouts, or if you could give me some examples of good cardio to add to my routines?

Thanks

I'm a little past 39 and still working at it. I'd like to lose around 20 pounds and then tone up the rest. I've been at 230 for awhile and can't seem to get it lower. The good thing though is that people at work keep asking if I've lost weight. I think I'm toning up more than losing and that darned muscle weighs more! :teeth:

I hope so. I turned 50 in May and have been a health improvement kick since Feb 2005. Since Feb I have lost 20 lbs. At first during losing I was with a group at my school where I teach but since July the group that has imspired me the most has been the people on the DIS. The challenges have kept me motivated and encouraged me to do my best. Just keep at it. I have about 50 lbs to lose but I am taking it slow and still enjoying the finer things in life.
