Has anyone vacationed in Boston?

Thank you everyone for your help! I am going to look at Boston for maybe next year. We decided to change the vacation and go to Bermuda on a cruise instead.
All your information has been very helpful, and I have decided when we do go, I am definately flying and stayin in Boston and not Salem!
I will just do a day in Salem.

I currently have a 4 night vacation planned in Salem and am planning a day in Salem, a day in Boston and then a day of just sightseeing around. Is Boston a great place to visit??
I am torn because I have been thinking of cancelling that vacation and taking a cruise to Bermuda (will cost the same amount basically). But not sure if I am making the right decision!!!

Any input or advice would be great!

I wouldn't say I 'vacationed' in Boston but did visit for a weekend. Last summer we cruised to Bermuda from Bayonne. If both were the same price, I'd vote for the cruise. I admit my opinion is very biased: I love cruising and not a city person. I work in Philly and escape that city feeling any chance I get.

i moved to the Boston area almost 2 years ago and haven't even scratched the surface of things to do and see. I DO love Salem...another place you might consider while you are here is Hammond Castle in Gloucester. It's an awesome medieval style castle on the ocean in Gloucester. The Gorton's fisherman statue is also there...I thought that was kinda cool.

You can take the ferry from Salem to Boston and it will drop you right by Faneuil Hall ( I am NOT a native and don't care if i misspell it. :P) if I'm not mistaken. We also enjoyed an afternoon out at George's Island in the Boston Harbor. There is really lots to do here.

Alas, October is too late for a Sox game...and tickets ain't cheap! But it's definitely worth a trip to do the Fenway tour if you are a baseball fan at all. I believe Fenway is the oldest standing ballpark now.

you will love BERMUDA in October...we went to Bermuda on a cruise......departed from Boston. We actually spent a couple of days in Boston before the cruise...took a drive up the coast...visited Salem. We had a blast. Loved Boston and Salem..it was cold though.

The Cruise to BERMUDA was awesome. The first day on the cruise was cold but then we hit the warm air. You will love BERMUDA. Have cruised there twice and would do it again in a heartbeat. Make sure you visit Horeshoe Bay and Tobacco Bay. The water temperatures were perfect. Had all summer to warm those waters up.

St George is an awesome small quaint town. The people on the island are very friendly..they do not bother you like they do in the Caribbean. If you have any questions regarding Bermuda let me know.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for all the great information in this thread. I am thinking about taking the kids to Boston this summer, driving from Cleveland. Does anyone know of any good stops on the way? Our problem is finding affordable hotel rooms for the 7 of us (nephew going too). Does anyone have any suggestions? We would be going in late July.

There are lots of decent, clean, affordable hotels in Syracuse, NY, which is just about half-way between Cleveland and Boston; we used to live in Syracuse, with MIL outside of Cleveland and mom just north of Boston (southern maine, actually!).

Boston... I love that dirty water! Grew up in a small town next to Salem, took classes at MIT while in high school, worked in Kenmore Square for a year. While in high school we spent as much time as humanly possible wandering around Boston! We live in Bangor, ME now but try to get to Boston once a year, if possible. Definitely do the Duck Tour- it's worth every penny, lots of fun, amusing drivers, and really the only way to see the city because the traffic is so horrifying it's not worth trying to drive. GREAT city views from the top of the Prudential Centre, and there's a great shopping mall right in the Center. This is also where Duck Tours leaves from. We love the Aquarium, and hey! Take the water shuttle (part of the mbta system) over to Charlestown to tour the USS Constitution! Great views of the city from the water, and the ship is amazing! Don't forget to go to the Museum of Fine Arts- fascinating and not at all stuffy, really there is something for everyone in the family. The North End is an amazing Little Italy with wonderful, affordable, authentic Italian restaurants and bakeries, and is within walking distance of Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Also, Sam Adams brewery is on the T line; brewery tours and free tastings, wahoo!! Last few times we were in town I Pricelined a hotel room; got the Doubletree on the edge of the theatre district (walking distance to Boston Common) for about $50/night for a room with either 1 king or 2 double beds, fridge, coffeemaker. VERY nice, super affordable! WHEW... I will stop and catch my breath... don't get me started about Cambridge, which is just across the Charles from Boston!
