Has anyone used their points for the Concierge or World Collection?

Much as I love Disney, it's nice to do other things for vacation so I was wondering what the opinion is about using points for non-Disney hotels.

Like when me and my high school friends get together in the City it would be great to use my points for a night or two at the Parker Meridian. Or if the family wants to spend a few days in Boston and take in a "Sawks" game, we could stay at Nine Zero Hotel or spend a few days at the Sagamore in Lake George. Or maybe a week in Cancun or Punta Cana. Or go to Europe.

I just think if we have the ability to get the room on points and not pay cash, it makes sense but I'm not sure how easy it is. When I tried to see what was available for a week Key West I had trouble finding dates that were available. I guess I could call but we're not ready to book anything yet.

Disney advertises that you can use your points all over the world but the fine print says subject to availability and they warn don't buy DVC based on perks or current offerings.

We booked The Manhattan Club through DVC's Concierge Collection for Thanksgiving 2013. We had the larger 1BR unit, 6 nights, for 200 DVC points + $95 transaction fee. I thought that was a GREAT deal and am sad that TMC has been removed from the Collection. Oh well -- glad I booked it while I had the chance!

We use RCI/II and other exchange companies often against our other timeshare -- but have not yet needed to trade DVC out through the World Collection. In general, I feel that the exchanges are "downgrades" from DVC simply based on the costs involved. I can book most of the RCI options more efficiently using my other timeshares.

I know. We bought because we wanted Disney, it was just a nice perk to be able to use our points in other places if we needed to - like a long weekend in Boston or a night or two in the city to see a show with friends. Especially when you consider that even the cheapest hotels in NYC like Comfort Inn and Quality Inn can run $150-$200 a night.

I borrowed some points from 2017 for our WDW trip next week so I have about a hundred 2017 points left that I will bank for 2018 but if we can't take a trip in 2018, I don't know if I will lose my banked 2017 points or if they will let me bank all my 2017 and 2018 points for 2019. If I have to "use or lose" the 2017 points, taking a short weekend somewhere would be a nice way to use them.

I don't own any other timeshares so if we were to do RCI hotels, it would be with DVC points.

You can only bank points one time. If you don't use the 2017 points after you have banked them, you will lose them.

However, you could give them over to a broker to sell and take the proceeds and book any hotel you want.

I dont know the Concierge or World Collection, but I do know RCI.

Normally exchanging through RCI is a downgrade 9 out of 10 times compared to DVC. Your are better of renting out your point and use the money for something else. If you do want to exchange within RCI, I would recommend getting a specific timeshare which uses RCI.

You could actually get a good "trader" within RCI for approx 1000$ sometimes including costs. That would cost less than 400$(1BR) in mf per year, and this would give you 5-7 days in Hilton NYC or a week most places.

IMHO DVC points are used best within DVC. I'm currently in my ROFR and hopefully it will pass, those points will not be used anywhere near RCI - Same goes with my HGVC points (unless I trade for a DVC unit :) )

So if I want to go anywhere else than HGVC I use my RCI trader for that, and rent out my HGVC points.

Regards

We used our points for our first Disney Cruise a couple of months ago, we stayed Concierge. Glad we did, but it's over and wouldn't do it again. There was a time (after baby was born), we didn't travel. Ended up putting points in RCI. Lived in California at the time and found using our points within the state, like Lake Tahoe, extremely difficult. Will not use RCI again.

Look at the value but it's almost never a reasonable option, esp for MX exchanges through RCI.

What do you mean by "trader" and what is HGVC? And how do I go about renting points? I've heard it can be risky - if the renter doesn't pay their bill, Disney can come after me.

We have used our points for stays at:
RCI - Ft Myers & Ft Lauderdale
Concierge Collection - Miami (Doral) & Grove Park Inn, Asheville NC
DCL - 8 cruises fully or partially on points

Check out the rci portal, you can get some good deals trading for the Manhattan club, and/or a few other NYC hotels. The NYC trade-in with DVC are very good.
Other locations not so good.

Using DVC points for anything other than DVC stays is like putting premium gas in your car. Some people do it even though it costs more just because they think that it is better.

A cheap timeshare with low dues that you can use to join RCI. Trade up with it to a better quality resort.

Hilton Grand Vacations Club. You are a member of HGVC if you buy from Hilton.

If you want to make it easy, use a broker to rent out your DVC points. All you need to do is call and make the reservation when you get a notification that the broker needs someone with your points.
