Has anyone used Scotchguard on clothes?

DD3 is one of the messiest creatures on the face of the planet. I can't really get mad about it, since she's not willfully destructive, she just can't seem to help getting stains (food, paints, markers, anything she's around) on her clothes, especially her shirts. I've tried bibs and art smocks (she manages to get stains on parts not covered or takes the bib off and then goes back for "one more bite").

And I've tried every stain-removing technique out there, it seems. But after washing items several times and not getting the stains out, I have to throw them away.

I finally got the bright idea that I should think about Scotchguarding some of DD's shirts. Has anyone done this? Did it help?

I've Scotchguarded jeans for skiing. It waterproofed them fairly well, but I would only do this to clothes that were earmarked for messy/destructive activities. It leaves a canvas-like finish on the clothes, I wouldn't do it to work/school clothes.

According to the Scotchguard website they've got one or two products for waterproofing and they've got one just for stain protection. I was thinking about trying the stain protection one. Maybe I'll try it on some of DD's less-expensive clothes first.

I could be wrong but, I think that if you SCotchguard you have to use soap, not detergent to launder clothes. So Ivory Flakes, not All.

Just like with fire retardency, detergent will wash away the Scotchguard.

Maybe someone knows for sure.

Have you looked into--I think it's Sears? I think that they sell clothes guaranteed to nto stain.

Scotchguard only repels water not dirt. Clothing will still stain & get dirty if something drops on it & it gets embedded in the fibers.

Be careful to spray outdoors when using Scotchguard. It is unfortunately widely used by teens who inhale it to get high.

A better idea is to simply buy a bunch of cheap clothing for DD to wear while eating, and can be tossed when too badly stained - forget about using stain treatments.

I'm an adult & I still dribble something over my clothes. I purposely wear crappy $5 T-shirts while having my morning coffee when I'm not very awake, or while eating things like spaghetti. A new T-shirt doesn't stay coffee-free for very long. There are certain clothes, like my job interview clothes, that I've learned NEVER to eat in. That's just asking for trouble.
