Has anyone tried New York Institute of Photography? I want to learn more about photography and photoshop and I wonder if this is worth the money? I have a busy schedule (work 60+ hrs per week) and regular classes just dont fit my schedule.
:cool2:

I am taking it right now. The first two units can be pretty dern boring. Lots of basics - lots of stuff that also covers film and not just digital.

BUT - with that said - I did learn alot from those two units. I was able to apply some of the darkroom/filter film stuff to photoshop. It also really opened my eyes and made me think and look at things differently.

I am going through it at a snails pace because - well life gets in the way. ;) The fact that you can do this at your own pace is the only way I would have been able to do any type of classes.

I do not regret signing up for it at all and recommend it to anyone who wants to really dig into the nitty gritty of photography and do some serious learning.

cost about 700 to 800 depending on how you want to pay for it.

I took the course back in the days of the dinosaurs, I highly recommend it for anyone that is serious about learnng, and has a crazy schedule

as DVC Jen said, one of the best things is being able to take the course at your own pace, If I remember correctly you actually have 3 years to complete it if you need that much time...

as for the cost, when I took it, you could make monthly payments instead of paying the total cost up front..

if you choose the payment plan, they send one set of lessons for each 2 payments...

I liked the fact that you were assigned a personal advisor, and given a phone number to contact them if neccessary,

when you did a photo assignment and sent it in, they would critique your photos..they never said anything negative,,they would say what they liked about a photo, then suggest what you might want to try the next time...

IIRC, I read that they were in the process of updating the course materials. Does anyone know if that has happened?

I am not sure if they are totally finished - but with each new unit that I have gotten recently - there has been another book added about digital photography and all of the audio has been updated as well.

Thanks. Not sure when I'd fit it in, but I would like to do this.

This is also the worst thing about the course. I am a procrastinator, by trade, and I find that without being pushed into a deadline, it's hard to move on to the next course. And, yes, 3 years to finish.

I am thinking of taking the Digital Photography course but have some questions that their website does not cover. I am hoping that someone here can help.

I only have a basic point and shoot digital camera, will this work for the digital photography course?

What kind of topics are covered?

What are the assignments like?

Any other information that anybody has about this course would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, I have looked at the link about the equipment, but didn't know from people that have taken the course weather or not they actually found a point and shoot digital camera to meet the needs of the course.

I think you would get more out of the course if you had a dslr, though a point and shot would get you some basic understanding of what the course is teaching. I would only take the entry level photo class with a point and shot camera

If you P&S has the ability to shoot in manual mode, then you're set. If not, then it may be hard to proceed through the full course. Know that this course if for someone that wants to go Pro, ot for very serious amatuers. There is a lot of material that is not about taking and editing photos.

i know some other places have online courses, like adorama...although they seem more expensive since they are over $100 each...but you can pick what you want ie i don't really want the wedding stuff/fashion type info from nyip...has anyone used anyone other than nyip for photo courses?

just got the first lesson in the mail. looks like it is updated copyright mark of 2004. nice layout of cds, books etc. the first 2 lessons are kinda basic stuff, but it looks like it is worth the money.
