Has anyone toured the Hunley?

This is on our list for our Charleston trip next month. We're all history buffs so really looking forward to it.

If you've toured it, can you tell me how much time to allow? I see that the tour tickets are presold for time slots every 20 minute increments, but I can't tell if that's all there is. Surely there is a visitor center connected with it, static displays, etc.

We've been twice. The last time was about 2 years ago. I can't remember exactly how long the tour lasts, but you are not allowed to take pictures or video inside the area where the Hunley actual is. They have some of the things that were taken from the Hunley on display: Dixon's gold coin, a crew member's shoes, etc. These were in the room with the Hunley. You have to walk up some stairs so you can actually look down inside the sub. Outside that room, there are other displays and souvenirs for purchase. They're working on a visitors center, but it won't be there. They're moving to another location nearby, but I don't know when. Here's the website: http://www.hunley.org/

We enjoyed the tour because we love history. We were also in Charleston when they had the burial of the crew, including Dixon, in 2004. While you're there, you may want to check out Magnolia Cemetery where all 3 crews are buried.

We were there about 5 years ago. My DS was in first grade and read a book about it. So the following summer we took a camping trip to South Carolina to check it out. Fascinating! You are actually in the room with the Hunley for about 20 min or so, then there is another museum type room with various artifacts and such. When we went, there was a life size model of the Hunley that you could actually get in and see just how small it really was. Oh, they had the coin there too. And of course there was a gift shop. In all, we probably spent about 2 to 2.5 hours there.

Can't wait until they get the new museum up and running. Last time I was in Charleston with enough time to do a lot of sight seeing was before they raised her and I'm waiting to go back until the new museum is open.
