We are thinking about doing a park and fly package before our trip. Will be able to get dinner someplace in the airport or are we "stuck" in the Westin? How was the hotel?

I have stayed at the Westin twice when our connecting flight to Grand Rapids was cancelled. It is a very nice hotel. It is extremely convenient to get to your gate when the time comes! I don't think you will be able to eat at the concourse restaurants though since you would need to go through security to get to them.

I think the DTW Westin is part of the AACE program with TSA, so if you qualify and go through the screening, REGISTERED guests can go to the sterile parts of the McNamara terminal for dining and shopping. Below is a brief description of the program from the DHS website:

AACE
Airport Access Authorization To Commercial Establishments Beyond The Screening Checkpoint (AAACE) Program - November 22, 2006 (PDF, 15 pages - 291 KB) The airport operating authorities seek to establish the Airport Access Authorization To Commercial Establishments Beyond The Screening Checkpoint (AAACE) Program. Under this pilot program, each airport operator may issue an Authorization Form to current registered overnight hotel guests (Registered Guest) at certain hotels physically connected to the airport terminal, who have requested access to commercial establishments beyond the screening checkpoint in the sterile area of the airport if they meet the requirements of the program.

Here is a link to a map of the terminal's restaurants, shopping, etc.

We always stay there before trips. We love the convience and it feels like an extension of our vacation. We have never tried to enter the concourse- but I think you can. We ate at the restaurant there- I think it is called dima. It was slow, unfriendly, and expensive. The food was decent though. It is also very nice to have your car warm and ready for you upon return. I love staying at the westin there

We often stay there before early morning flights. It's so convenient. The rooms are very nice and you don't really hear the planes.

I've never tried to eat at the concourse. Your best bet is to have dinner somewhere away from the airport before you arrive. The restaurant and room service are very expensive.

If you're going to stay there, sign up to be a Starwood Preferred Guest. You earn points toward future stays, get better rates, and can get an upgraded room and other perks. You can use those points toward the Dolphin/Swan at WDW. ;) It's free!

ETA: The Westin also has it's own security gate so you don't have to go through security in the main part of the airport.

It sounds like a great place to stay. I am going to book a room today. It is only $134 with 10 days of parking included. I am all for leaving a day early for my vacation:cool1:
