Has anyone stayed at the Grove Park Inn recently?

We are driving down to North Carolina in September and we need to use up some banked points from last year, so we thought we'd try the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC for a few nights, but after reading reviews on TripAdvisor I'm not so sure! I'd hate to waste those points on a place that doesn't seem worthy of the 52 points/night required to stay there.
Has anyone been there recently?
Thanks in advance! :)

Live in Asheville, visit the spa 2-3 times per year . What kind of info are you looking for ?

The reviews were great for the spa, but most people on tripadvisor said the hotel staff was awful and the hotel rooms in bad shape. I guess I was hoping to find a DVC member's opinion of the place and how they were treated using points.
Thanks for responding!

My mom stays there for a conference every year in February and I have never heard her say anything bad about it - all the conference attendees rave about everything. Maybe those reviewers were expecting something different - more current, less historical? I haven't stayed there or read the reviews.

PS - a quick look reveals that it gets 4 stars from reviewers on expedia, hotels.com, yelp.com and tripadvisor and a few other aggregator type sites. I think those are pretty good ratings, notwithstanding any negative specific reviews.

My Mom and sister went a little before Christmas last year and stayed there on DVC points in a "mountain view" room. They really seemed to enjoy themselves and had no complaints about the room or staff.

We've stayed there a couple of times for their Gingerbread Competition and to be a participant on a Food Network Challenge. We enjoyed all of our stays there - the rooms are more historical in the original wing, but the newer wing was fine too. I will agree about the staff - they weren't that friendly to us, but it wouldn't stop us from visiting the hotel again.

Just so you know ... it's now the Omni Grove park Inn. Hopefully any changes Omni makes will be positive.

We used to go up there 2-3 times a year. It's so much more expensive since they opened the spa. We still go to Asheville, just stay other places. But honestly, the whole town has gotten more expensive!

Asheville is a fun place. Have some meals off the beaten path, explore the arts district.

Thanks everyone for responding so quickly! I think we will give it a whirl and form our own opinion. I'm excited to finally get to see Asheville, it's a place I've always wanted to visit :)

We're just back from GPI on 4th of July weekend. The Sammons wing is being renovated so that might be some of the reason for poor reviews. The views from GPI are amazing. Restaurants on site a bit expensive. Definitely worth a stay though. If you do go must get a diner reservation at curate (offsite, downtown) and try French broad chocolates around the corner. Have fun!
