Has anyone stayed at AKL just to do the Sunrise Safari?

I CANNOT believe that I talked my DH into another trip at WDW! He was the BIGGEST wet blanket when it came to planning for last year's trip. I have been reading how awesome the Sunrise Safari is and I want to do this on our trip next summer.

On our trip last year, we spent the first two days doing fun stuff in the WDW area but not visiting any parks. It was a GREAT way to start our adventure at Disneyworld. I want to do that again next summer. I thought two days at AKL would be a fun way to start the trip. Is there enough to do at the lodge to keep us busy for two days? How exactly is the sunrise safari different than the Kilamanjaro ride during regular park hours?

Are you planning to book into the Concierge section of AKL?

We're staying at AKL in December just to do the Sunrise Safari. DH requested it, as we've done it in December of 2001 and 2002.

Unfortunately, the Sunrise Safari is only available to be booked by Concierge guests.

I just read your signature, and you'll be doing Concierge in July.

It's a longer adventure than the regular Safari ride, with some "backstage" views of the animal housing areas (no photos or filming allowed) and the actual ride part of the Safari is wonderful!
You get to see the wildlife at the beginning of their day at their habitat, and the tourguide has all sorts of interesting information. You can ask any questions you'd like from anything about the veterinarians method of treating the animals to how they keep hunter and hunted species from being hunted.......

And after the tour is a private breakfast buffet at Tusker House.

I want to do the sunrise sarfari sooooo bad... I have been debating if we should book at AKL for the Sat nite after our spring break cruise.. or in the summer between BCV and OKW??

Which is better??? are the animals more active in the spring than the summer or at that hour does it matter??

If you have been on the regular kilamanjaro ride.. you know it is about 10-15 minutes and has the story line of poachers shooting Big Red the elephant.

The sunrise safari has none of that stuff... it is just quiet and peaceful.. all the animals are just coming out for the day so they are active. The safari is about 45 minutes... your personal guide is there along with the driver and he points out things along the way, stops for photos whenever you like, answers questions and gives some inside info along the way.

Prior to the safari you drive through the back stage area of the park which is a good 10 minute ride past all kinds of specialized buildings and again your guide points out everything along the way.

After the safari you have a wonderful breakfast and then on your way out they give you fast passes to do the ride the regular way with the sound effects and story line.

If you have an opportunity to do the sunrise safari you would be absolutely nuts to pass it by.

My DD and I have done it twice now.. and I would do it again in a heartbeat.. well worth the 50.00.

BTW, just a heads up - if you want to do the Safari - you need to stay at the Concierge level on a Monday night or a FRIDAY night - the Safari is on Tuesday and Saturday mornings - so you need to stay at the AKL the night before to be able to access the lounge at 6:30 in the morning for registration. A Saturday night stay won't work.

Thank you for the replies. It does sound wonderful. We plan to fly down and stay at AKL Friday and Saturday night then check into our Poly room July 4th.

Remember that those days can change. We went on the sunrise safari on a Wednesday. That was in September of 2002. We will do this again without hesitation next year.

We were going to stay at AKL concierge for a couple of nights just to do the safari, but then I thought, why not just go all the way! So we're staying concierge the for the whole time.

I finally talked my DH into a trip there for our Anniversary (all that was available LOL) but we are leaving too early to do the Safari, how far in advance did you know the SS was going to be on Weds.?

I really enjoyed it with my boys and would love to do it again.

Thanks TDC Nala... that sounds just wonderful...that will help DH to justify the cost of Concierge.... especiall since DS 12 is a bottomless pit... feeding him can be costly..
