Has anyone sold gold lately?

are you asking about .9999bullion or scrap jewelry? If bullion I think Apmex will give you market price for $10,000 or more....If scrap i know Warren Buffet bought a company awhile back that is supposed to offer fair prices. I cant remember the name now but I am sure it would be fairly easy to find online. The main thing with scrap is to find a website with a "scrap converter" meaning it tells you how much actual gold you have by weight for each carrot. Also be sure the prices you are getting are by the gram or ounce not by pennyweight. Many of the "we buy gold" companies will rip you off and only give you about half of what you should get. Do your research and use the BBB for whatever area the company is in. i looked at one one time and it was only giving around 300 an ounce (i think gold was selling at 1100 at the time). If a company asks you to "just put your gold in an envelope and we will do the rest" BE SUSPICIOUS. If you do it by mail weigh it and insure it before you send it off - take pictures and inventory what you sent. Also find out what the return costs are before you send your gold to a company....really you should know what you are getting paid before it is ever mailed.

I went to my local jeweler who advertised the BEST prices given for your gold. I took in my wedding rings from first marriage so that was an engagement ring and a band with some diamonds in it. I was offered $78:headache: I walked!

I sold a very thin 16 or 18 inch 14 carat chain for $37. i went to a local store that has been in business since the early 80s - figured they were still around and I hadn't heard anything bad about them. Have some other pieces to sell but will wait awhile. The price for each piece is determined by the carat so 10 carat pays less that 14 and 14 is less than 18 etc. Many wedding bands are 10K so will not bring as much as you might think. He told me that he would get $44 when he sold the chain to the next person in the process. I was just glad to have the money for what was a broken chain that had no sentimental value and would probably have cost almost that to fix if it was even fixable. I do think you have to be very careful who you deal with and it might be best to try a couple of places to see what happens.

my mom sold some broken earrings last weekend and got almost 200 for them. They were just laying around, ugly, and just for kicks she said "lets go to the mall and see what they will give us for this". 200 later we were laughing because they were small and ugly and maybe was only expecting like 20.00 or so. Needless to say, the 200 was spent before we left the mall! :rotfl:

I just sold some this past week. Thanks to another thread here on the DIS I used US Gold Buyers. They are based in Manhattan and you can walk in to their office weekdays if that's an option for you. I just send in 3 broken necklaces (lightweight, which is why they broke), 2 charms, and 2 rings. I took them to a local place and they offered me $203. US Gold Buyers called me with an offer of $439 which I happily accepted.:woohoo: I Fedexed the items to them on Monday (on their dime), got the call from them Tuesday and had the check in hand on Friday. I couldn't be happier with their service. I think the other thread was "WOW! I just sold my old gold" if you want other references.

I second this:thumbsup2

I used them last year and had a very positive experience. The thread out there that was mentioned has a lot of similar stories.

Good luck,
Heather

I also sold gold to US Goldbuyers last year, twice. The process was easy!

That's terrible! Glad you walked away.

I did a gold party. I got $1235 for my gold and then my commission for my party was $370. Then I am getting 5% from the party's that booked off mine. I made out alot better doing it this way and they do it all right in front of you. It was a big company that does party's all over the US.

And who is paying those commissions? The people who went to your gold party and the others you get a piece of, which is a good reason to avoid gold parties and deal direct.

I just saw a show last week where they did a story on in-house gold parties and how people are getting ripped off. It was stated in the story that when selling your gold items you should get, if I remember correctly, 65%-75% of the value of those items. The average people got at the undecover in-house party was only 44% of the value.
