Has anyone read the Lemony Snicket books?

My DS and DH is reading them now. DS loves them. Full series title is A Series Of UNfortunate Events, I believe. There are 8 of them right now, but they have only read the first two so far.

From son: ive read the first three, (the bad beggining, the reptile room, and the wide window.) they're my favorite books. its funny the way he writes, and theres even a warning on the back.

I have never heard of them. Are they are children's series of books? I miss having children around!!!!

We read the first six or so and enjoyed them. Then we started getting annoyed at how stupid they were.

Our DD just finished the 9th one. She's 13 and thinks the books are wonderful. In fact, she just did a book report for school on the 9th book. She's ready for the 10th one and the 9th one just came out.

I got too sad when I tried to read it. Won't be required reading in my class.....

These book were VERY popular with the 4th & 5th graders at DD's school last year. I read a couple of them - just because I had run out of any other reading material. I found them amusing because they were so preposterous! DD's response was pretty much the same. . . a couple were okay, but then they wore thin.

One of her friends told me that her mother wouldn't let her read them because she saw "no reason to read something so depressing." She borrowed a book from a friend & said she thought they were dumb - "but dumb enough to be slightly funny."

Definitely not the majority opinion, but . . . .

They are making a Lemony Snicket movie this fall in New York with possibly Jim Carrey as one of the lead characters. They are hoping it will be the American "Harry Potter" franchise.

My DDs love them (now 14 and 12)...have been reading them for a while, and still look forward to the next in the series coming out.

Zurg has read the first 7 to the boys twice...he has just started reading the 8th in the series....My boys just love them...they can be dark but the boys think they are great....

We started them after the lul in Harry Potter books....

I think we are on book 9.

I love them.

Also look at the Artimus Fowl books. Techno thrillers with fairies and leprecon - clancy books for kids.

My 9 year old ds is on book # 4, and he loves them. He reads them for an hour or more at a time. I think they help fill the Harry Potter lull as well.

I heard about them last year when I went looking for a gift for my nephew. The woman at the bookstore recommended them. Now my DSs are reading them, and they're enjoying them. I'd guess they were for readers 9 years and older...
