I broke my ankle three weeks ago. Next week I'm getting my cast changed to a walking cast. Are walking casts more comfortable or difficult?

Ouch! Sorry to hear that! My DH broke his ankle in August and required 2 screws... what a pain in the rear he was:lmao:
I can tell you from watching his experience, and he had everything from unna boots, to the walking cast, to the regular cast, to splints. He said in his opinion the walkign cast was the worst. They put it on in the clinic and he had it off in the car. He said it felt like the top of his leg was beign stressed. He then got a brace to wear in his boot/shoe. He said that brace was the best thing he had ever felt. Now this coming from the man who cut off his own hard cast, it was huge that anythign made him happy. With that said, you may feel okay in the walking cast, but he definetly gave the brace a thumbs up. Good luck!;)

Thanks for info. It does seem like a walking cast would be uncomfortable. I'm hoping mine isn't uncomfortable. I'm tired of the crutches so I'm kind of excited to walk.

Sorry about your injury. I broke my foot and was heading to disney so they let me get the walking cast. Really for me it was great. I suggest wearing a THIN sock under it to keep it comfortable. And really it's great - you can easily take a shower. I even was able to go to Discovery Cove with it on! I took it off to go into the water then right back on when I was walking.

Way more comfortable to me. Good luck. And I always suggest the boot walking cast for anyone. And everyone that's tried it always says it's great= (not to dis the previous posters husband- but to a mom being able to move about freely was the best thing possible.

He was a general pain in the rear through the whole ordeal:lmao: He used the big thick sock that it came with. Wonder if a thin one would have made a difference for him. He just felt like his leg was going to snap off at the knee when he tried to walk. Like I said, this was the guy who cut off his own cast:lmao:
Are you supposed to be in it for 4 weeks?

I will have it on for 4 weeks.

I would suggest going over to the disABILITIES Forum. One of the first threads is the disABILITIES FAQs. To get directly to the disABILITIES FAQs from here just click on the link in my signature.

Been wearing this baby for going on 18 weeks now. YES, I said 18 WEEKS! :sad2: I broke my ankle back in July and wound up having surgery in October. Actually, of all the splints, bandages, etc we've tried, the walking cast has been the most comfortable for me.

I like it because you can take it off for a shower and if I'm a good girl and don't get up I can take it off and lay on the sofa and let my foot breathe :cloud9: Usually they have inflatable cushions built in so you can adjust the tension to your own needs which tend to change a LOT! I went out and bought some of those BIG STRETCHY FUZZY socks you wear with jammies, you know the kind I mean? I wear 1 on my bad foot and it stays warm and provides extra padding and prevents irritation and it's not too tight which I found was a HUGE problem with regular socks.

Sorry to see you join the Gimper's Club. It really sucks :guilty:

Wow 18 weeks is pretty long. When do you get it off. I hate being a gimper too. It's has been hard to bathe, cook and do a lot of stuff. I think once I get rid of the crutches it will be better because I do more stuff.
