OK I'm picky. I want a tank cut bodice with an a-line skirt. Of course...EVERYTHING is STRAPLESS...Now, not for nothing...but I have just enough to make a wall jealous and am unbelievable afraid that I will be walking down the aisle, step on the hem of my skirt and WHOOPS! There is all goes... :scared1:
So, I've entertained the idea of having a dress made. I have a woman to make it and have looked at a couple of patterns...I seem to like some different parts of different dresses, but she assures me that I can put together what I want. Then there is the question of...Well, what if all is said and done and I don't love it  I have one HUGE requirement...feel free to laugh. I'm petrified of TAN LINES!!! SO, the tank part of the dress has to be either slightly higher then the lines on my tank tops or right on par...that way...no tan lines. I'd wear a tube top or something...but again afraid I might show it all by some freak accident
Now, I am certain we have a couple of years until the whole wedding thing plays out..but BF has told me to plan away...FINE. The dress is the biggest issue. Honestly, if I found one tomorrow that I had to have...I'd buy it. I'm pretty certain 2010 will be the date. SO, with that said...here's to crossing my fingers and hoping tank cut dresses come back in style...
Until then...
Have any of you had your dress made?
Did you have beading or embroidery work done to it?
Was having your dress made a last ditch option b/c you couldnt find "the one"?

Any help greatly appreciated.
:wizard: Again, here's to hoping that tank cut bodices come back in style!!!

Hiya, I haven't had a dress made but know what you mean about the tan lines! I originally wanted a dress with a tank top style but after trying on a strapless one I fell in love with it.

I've got sun block, sleeves and higher necks at the ready for when we go! I'm also going to get a spray tan (I know that doesn't give an protection against the sun) but I have the classic English Rose complexion and skin, ie white, and just a sniff of the sun gives me colour.

If you can, I would recommend finding a dress that has the style top you are after and trying it on to make sure. If you can't find one that has the style of skirt with it at least you would get an idea of whether you like the top.

Good luck and happy planning! Don't forget to post details of your plans - we love them! :goodvibes

Oh, just thought of something. Could you get your dressmaker to make a mock-up in cotton? It wouldn't have the same weight or drape as silk or satin but it would give you a really good idea as to whether you like it.

It sounds as though you and I are built alike up top :rolleyes1 . I thought "no way I can wear a strapless dress, it might fall off". My dress is strapless though. First off, the inside has an elastic sort of wraparound (I know that makes no sense, I just can't explain it any better and have no pics). This is under the zipper and helps tremendously to keep the top in place. Secondly, my dress is two pieces, which fit me better (I am short waisted, and all the one piecers were digging my hip bones.) The worst that will happen, is my skirt will fall off if I step on it too hard :rotfl:

Seriously, though, have you traied on a strapless? They are different from other strapless things you may have worn. Many of them have a lot of structure of other supprt that is invisable on the outside and desinged to keep you comfortable and without wardrobe malfunctions. If it made you feel better, you could even use dress tape if you wanted.

Good luck :wizard:

Love the idea of a mock up...didn't even think of it.

Nope, I havent even gone near a strapless dress...Watch-that is what I'll end up with :rolleyes1 I like to 2 piece idea...I think next time mom takes a day off we need to have a play day.

I am patiently waiting for our engagement. I'm guessing he is waiting for me to graduate...Luckily, since mom works at the college I am going to I get her benefits (no tuition and only fees for full time :cheer2: ) But if I were to get married, we would take a $50,000 hit for me to finish my education...So, economically, it makes more sense to wait. He has been great about letting me plan though.

No worries, as soon as the ring is place on my finger...All details will be posted!!! :wizard:

I totally agree with Irisbud...I NEVER EVER wear tube tops or anything strapless for fear of it falling off. Once I tried on a strapless wedding dress though, I realized once it is zipped, that thing is not coming off no matter how hard I step on the bottom. A lot I tried on have something like boning that runs up and down along your ribs and fits the dress tightly against your body. There is no possible way for that boning to fit past your hips, so there is no way for it to fall down.

If the tan lines are really an issue for you, I'm sure you'll be able to find a dress you like somewhere (or have it made if not.) You might want to consider just trying on some already made dresses to get an idea of what looks good on you (they are very good at making wedding dresses very flattering!)

Good luck with your dress hunt! :goodvibes

Ok well. I'll try them...but that's the best I can do...*LOL* I think this is my one biggest wedding hang up. :rotfl: For now anyway...:rotfl2: Sounds like I have to tell mom we are going shopping!

I also wanted a tank-top dress, since that's the most flattering neckline on me, and I almost bought this dress. It's Pronovias (style name: Lieja), and you can get it on eBay for around $500-$700.

I just didn't like the pickups, so I kept looking and... ended up with a %$&#@! strapless dress, which I swore I'd never do! :rotfl:

Lurkeyloo
Love the dress, love the pick ups-even the train is a good length...However, there is no pretty stuff on it. :rotfl:
This is going to be a long heard search...Thank goodness I have time!!!

Hi!
I had the same thought as you - NO WAY was I even going to CONSIDER a strapless dress. However, I do think about 90% of dresses are strapless. Anyway, a lot of places can add a spaghetti strap to a dress for you - David's Bridal is one of them. I think it's only about $20 or so. It's not the same as a tank style but hopefully it would alleviate your concerns about the dress falling off!

Don't feel like you have to rush into buying anything. A lot of us have tried on a LOT of dresses.

BTW I did end up with straps. :) It was a halter style.

I was initially going "nuh-uh" on the strapless dress too. It's for an entirely different reason, though - I'm wanting to avoid the sausage effect. An explanation for those of you who are less, um, fluffy: You know how meat in an overstuffed sausage squishes out of the casing? Picture the dress as the casing, with flubber (a.k.a. da meat) pouring out of the top and back. 'Nuff said. :scared:

I'm starting to reconsider, if only because many designers seem to include pretty beaded straps that you can hook inside the dress in order to have a slightly looser dress at the top (and thereby avoid most of the dreaded sausageness), and also be able to dance like a fool at the reception without worring that the girls are going to start wanting to make a break for it.
