Has anyone had outpatient hernia surgery?

Tomorrow I am driving to my parents house, 2 hours from here. My dad is having outpatient surgery, then being dishcharged home. My mother does not drive and is disabled, so after Sunday, I am concerned about how they are going to manage.

Has anyone had this surgery?
Outpatient?
How bad was the pain at home, did they give you proper pain control?

How many days before you could drive? The dr said he should be fine, but well, what if he isnt? I will stay the weekend, but then I am going to have to play it by ear and hope thye will be ok.

I know, I am a nursing student, but I can't help but be nervous when it is my dad!

MY DH had a double hernia repair as an outpatient. It was done laproscopically. He refused the wheelchair and walked to the car when he was discharged at 4pm the day of surgery, and two days later was back at work. The only problem he had was his belt hit right where the incisions were, so he couldn't wear a belt for a week or so, because it pressed on them and was uncomfortable.

I honestly don't remember specifically what he got for pain, but it was something good -lol. He didn't have any trouble. Hopefully things will go as well for your Dad.

My 10 year old son had hernia surgery in November. He had very little pain afterwards but we still kept him on his advil/tylenol schedule. The doc also gave us a script for something stronger but he didn't need it.

The hardest thing for him was getting up. He learned quickly to take it slow so the stitches didn't get pulled.

Obviously I can't help you with the driving part but he was on a no lifting,running or gym for 2 weeks afterward. According to Danny that was harder than the surygery.

The day of surgery was fine....day 2 is the worst of them all.
Better and better after that.
Could drive in a couple of days.
Just don't lift anything!! Very important.
Pain meds day 2 and then just OTC.

Ditto! I've had 5 outpatient and 2 in the hospital. If they are sending him home, it wont be that bad at all.

Is it an inguinal (groin) hernia or abdominal hernia? DH has had 3 hernia surgeries - all outpatient. The inguinal ones went well - he was mostly up & about the next day by himself. I left him alone the 2nd day after surgery. The abdominal one was bad. I've never seen a grown man in so much pain. He couldn't move by himself for 2 whole days, it was agony just to get off the bed or sofa. He had to have someone help him for about 4 days. The driving may be determined by what pain meds they give him - some stronger ones you can't drive for a week once they're in your system, regardless of how well you feel.

My then 5 year old had one 2 years ago and for him it was a piece of cake. He wanted to play soccer the next day. That was the hardest part. Keeping him quiet.
Now my Dad had the same surgery and he was acting like he was dying. So I am assuming it may be more difficult the older you are. But really the big thing with my Dad was ME being there to listen to the instructions for the after care of the wound. When to take what off.
My Dad didn't pay attention and when I called to check that he took off a bandage he said he was waiting for it to fall off. When I told him no he had to remove it- he felt much better.

I know a man who had double hernia surgery on Friday and was back to work on Monday. He had his as an outpatient. He said there was very little pain. It was done laproscopically. He walked slow and had to limit walkiing up and down stairs but he manage.

My dad had an inguinal hernia repair as an outpatinet a couple of years ago. I don't think he had any pain to speak of. I think they gave him an Rx for Percocet but he said "I'm not taking that" and he didn't, but never compalined that he was uncomfortable either. He laid low for a couple of days...no driving etc., and then he seemed fine.

My 76 yr old father just had one a few weeks ago. He was fine the day of the surgery. The next couple of days, he just took his pain meds and rested but did well. Nothing excruciating. It was on a Wed and by Mon, he couldnt wait to get out of the house.

I don't know if its because he's an active man, but I thought he did great and he says it wasnt that big a deal.
