Has anyone had a TEE (TransEsophageal Echo) for cardiac issues?

Last week I had a stress test done and before that an echo. Well, the Dr just called me and said he was looking over the echo and noticed something. He said it could be a growth, a clot or just nothing at all. regardless he wants me to have a TEE this week.
Needless to say this has shook me up. Because of my history (heart attack and pulmonary embolism) he wants to make sure he checks everything thoroughly.
Has anyone here had the procedure done? Has anyone had a growth? He said if it is one (a myxoma) it would have to be removed. He said it's on the right side. :worried:

DH had this done looking for an infection(vegetation) in the heart. It's pretty much the same deal as an upper endoscopy. He was sedated and remembered nothing. The TEE is a much better test for visualizing the left atrium and much clearer for all heart structures. No ribs, fat and muscle to have to get that signal through.

I've had an endoscopy before. Hated that numbing spray. I was so caught off guard when the Dr called. How long was the procedure. Was all well with your husband?

I've never had one, but I've assisted in them.

It's the same as the endoscopy. You will be asleep. I always tell patients the numbing spray, "smells like bananas but tastes like poison."

From start to finish you are looking at about 30 minutes.

My 80 year old FIL had this procedure two weeks ago. After they took him back, the doctor was out to talk with us in about ten minutes!! The only thing he found was that my FIL has a small leak in a valve--nothing he needs to have repaired at this time. He was released within half hour and we were at Bob Evans having breakfast. Good luck!!

This was a few years ago and he did have vegetation which required IV antibiotics, but he was fine after than. Sadly we lost him 2 years ago to something unrelated.

I had a TEE done. I don't remember most of it. They gave me whatever that medication is that makes you forget everything. It was a breeze For me they were looking at a congenital defect which I had corrected via open heart surgery shortly after.

This was my exact experience too.

What congenital defect did you have corrected?
I had a sinus venosus ASD.

Thanks for the replies. I'm so nervous about it. I'll find out today when the test will be. He wanted it done this week. If it is a Myxoma he said I'll have to have surgery to remove it. That makes me even more nervous.
How was the surgery for you? Long recovery time?

I don't have any advice but I have . I'll be watching for updates.

Thanks. Keeping it off Facebook for now until I find out for sure what's going on.

The Drs office just called and I'm having the test tomorrow morning.

I figured (with regard to the bolded).

Better to get the test over with and not have to think about it.

My Open Heart Surgery was 10 years ago. I was out of work for about 12 weeks. But I was able to drive about month after surgery and drove myself to rehab.

Thanks so much. They pushed it back to later in the day, which is fine, but that means no coffee this morning. Boo. I'll know something later this afternoon. I'm so nervous about the results.

Test went well yesterday. Just a sore throat this morning. Dr. said everything looked ok. He said what he saw on the other ultrasound turns out to be a prominent ridge, whatever that means.
Glad it's over. Scarey stuff. :scared1:

Thanks for the prayers and well wishes.
