Has anyone had a bad expierence renting points from a DVC'er???

I have contacted two different people about renting points at DVC for my upcoming vacation (both had contacted me initially when I inquired about renting points) but they are terrible regarding their responses and follow up. At this point, no money has exchanged hands but it is making me think twice about renting points from a stranger??? I'm just getting a bad feeling about the whole thing! (I've done it once but that was through a friend of mine and it was such a great expeirence, I love DVC!)

I don't rent, but I will say if you are having any bad feelings concerning your dealings, listen to them.

One due to the savings, this is a private deal. Disney will not bail you out if anything goes wrong, so be sure to deal with someone you can trust will not mess up your vacation.

Good luck. With the changes to Member Services policy about not being able to call and confirm your reservation, you are going to have complete trust with the other person.

Could be because you want the reservation for so cheap. BCV may require more $$$ per point, especially more than $7 per point. You need to offer something more like $10-14 per point.

If that makes the reservation too steep for you, you may need to plan to stay in the Value Resorts since they are more in your price range.

I agree, I think that your low offer is could make people wary or possibly just not interested. Its just as big of a risk for the DVC owner as you. In fact more because if I rent my points and somebody trashes that unit guess who pays for it! I have never rented and doubt I ever will because it would just be too stressful. Good luck to you getting something going, DVC accomodations are wonderful and I hope it works out for you.

I have to agree with the others. You are low-balling too much asking for $7 per point for Beach Club Villas. Even in February. If you are willing to pay a bit more it will be worth it to you. At $11-12 per point (the going rate for BCV, NOT $7) you're paying about $170 pre-tax which is a total bargain for BCV. If you do not pay a member enough to respect them then it is not surprising that they don't respect you in return.

I don't own, I'm a renter and agree. Our family is doing a split stay this September at the BWV/BCV and we are paying more than $7.00/point.

The going rate as anyone said is $10.00 at minimum. Someone responded to you and was willing to rent at $9.50, now thats a bargain.

I'm not going to comment on how much you are paying per point because that is between you and the DVC member.

I have rented twice from DVC members and have had wonderful experiences both times. I look to do business with people who are established on this board and seem to be on the up and up. I am a good risk because I pay in a timely manner, correspond in a timely manner and make sure that the DVC member and myself agree upon everything before payment is made. I am flexible to their needs as well as my own. If I ever get a bad feeling, no matter how good the bargain may be, it would not be worth it to me to risk my money and vacation. That's how I feel. the price that the people and I agreed upon was $8.5 and $9.5 which I don't consider cheap......and YIKES! I'm sorry I asked the question! I just posted a seniero on the boards that was in my budget and if no one responded that's fine. I'm not trying to take advantage of anyone or "low ball" anyone. They responded to me.
I've never felt so "attacked" and insulted by fellow DIS'ers before! It's so "not Disney".

Am I missing something? Where in the original post did it talk about how much money she/he wanted to pay for the points?

Sorry if you felt attacked or insulted I don't see that the previous posters did that in any way but were trying to give you a possible reason why you haven't been getting quick responses from the people you are trying to rent from. A lot of DVC owners feel insulted when they see people asking to rent for $7 a point, they value their properties and paid a lot more than $7 a point to own there.

I'm not an owner but I rented points for the first time for our October trip and paid $14 and thought I was getting a good deal for where I wanted to stay.

Anyway back to your original question, I wouldn't rent from someone who hasn't been quick to respond to my e-mails, it would make me think they are hesitant in renting to you and could possibly cancel on you. Good luck on your search and I hope everything works out for you.

Find someone who posts on the DVC boards often...you can get a feel for someone that way.
As to the price per point, I do know that it has been awhile since points were being rented at $7 per point. Anything under $10 is considered quite cheap nowadays. I think the DVCers are starting to reconsider what they can rent for...closer to $12-14 per point. If you get an offer of under $10 per point you have quite a good deal. But, I would be concerned also as to the integrity of the person renting to you. Sometimes you get exactly what you pay for. With the cost of our points going up, maintainence fees, dues all going up....we can't rent for under $10 a point anymore.
So, best of luck in your search....I wish I had points to rent out...I'm always in 'borrowing' mode!!!

To go back to the original question, I wouldn't rent points from anyone who is terrible regarding responses and follow up, especially after you've agreed to a price.

While there have been owners complaining that people are shopping for cheaper points after an agreement has been made, it could also be that in this case the owners are shopping for renters who are willing to pay more.

In my mind, both practices are equally tasteless if an agreement has already been struck.

If you get terrible communication, I'd notify the owner and cancel out. Also, I'd make sure that there is a written agreement that you both have agreed to so that both have their protections in a situation where mutual trust is necessary.

This appears to be a quagmire...if renters held to a standard $11-12 per point and then lowered to $10 for expired points, there would be no problems.

As a DVC owner, it makes me cry when I hear of resservations lover than $9 per point...

I don't know who you finally came to an agreement with, but this is one of the reasons why I recommend renting from an established and active member of the DIS. At the very least, you can reach them by PM here.

Please don't feel attacked. I think the posts were just trying to figure out why the responses regarding the points were so bad for you.

It does take awhile to hear back. The owner has to check the reservation. Also they may be emailing other renters to get the best deal for themselves. If the owners are new at renting it might take longer b/c they are new to the process. I know for me last year I had to go back and forth for awhile b/c my resort and dates were not availabe. I rented points in the past and anything under $10 is a deal. If you see a post under $10 act quick. Sometimes you email 4-5 people and only hear back from a few. It all depends. I have found some owners would rather rent all their points to one person so it is easier for both parties.

I have to agree with most of the other posters -- your price is the problem. Even at the top of your range, it's not an attractive price for anyone other than someone desperate to unload distressed points.

Until you have an agreed deal and confirmed ressie with an owner, they are going to continue to look for other renters. I'm sure they've already rented the points to someone else -- and that's why they have been unresponsive to you.

If you want to rent a DVC ressie, you need to have your dates firmly set, and be ready to make final arrangements and pay a significant deposit within a few days. If you are not in a position to do that, renting is probably not a great option for this trip.
