Hey Folks,

I just booked Disney World for the family in the last week of Aug. Has anyone been there at that time? Can you tell me if the crowds are overwhelming? and what about the wheather? I have two boys, 4 and 1 years old.
Thanks.

The crowds are heavy in Aug BUT you can do things to make it more bearable. Go to the parks early in the morning. If there are early entry mornings, take advantage of them. Otherwise, plan to be at the parks so you are there when the parks open. You can get a lot accomplished before the crowds get heavy. I would also recommend leaving mid day and return early evening ( this is a good plan if the parks are open later at night). Bring the battery operated fan misters for the kids. There are lots of places you can fill them up with ice. They also have battery fans that clip on to the stroller. I guess my best advice would be to pace yourself and expect heat!! You will also have some late afternoon showers. Don't let them scare you out of the park. A lot of people will leave when the rain starts BUT it usually only lasts a short time. As long as you are prepared you can enjoy yourself at this time of year. You should actually start to see the crowds thin by the end of Aug. Enjoy! any day in Disney is better than no day in Disney!

Hot and humid...very, very, VERY humid.......

Actually the crowds for your week will be pretty decent. most of the southern schools have already started so the summer crowds will drop alot. It will be seriously hot, no getting around that. We love going this time of year anyway. The parks are still open late so it leaves us plenty of time to go back to the resort during the heat of the day, swim or chill out then return to a park during the cooler evening hours.

I'll be there 8/23-8/31. I guess we'll find out what it's really like together! :dance3:

Yes- we went for our honeymoon Aug 24 I think we went for 7 days. I know we came home on Monday the holiday.
It was crowded, it was unbelievably hot and humid, I have learned how to tour much better.
Get up EARLY- get out and take a break/nap- thats often when the rain comes anyway, then go back in evening for a few hours and dinner.
Enjoy the waterparks!
Enjoy the pools
Drink lots of water
bring 2 pairs of sneakers, lots of socks (you'll need to change socks during your mid day break) sneakers may get wet if caught in rain.
bring moleskin
buy ponchos and travel with them
keep a poncho or stroller cover in the basket of your stroller and keep it covered even when you are in attractions and the sky looks clear
enjoy table service and A/C
Enjoy it at whatever pace works for your family. WDW is always fun if you have the right attitude. ;)

We went at the very same time last year with our 3 kids 11,8,5 and the inlaws. I had read about the heat and the rain, but was unprepared for either! The heat is enough to take your breath away, hot hot hot and humid like I have never experienced, we were wilted and sweaty moments after stepping out of our rooms! That said, we are planning to go back again the very same time again, so it wasn't all that bad. We tried to go early and come back for a swim, then go later in the day. Also alternating outdoor and indoor attractions, bringing the misting fans, and drinking LOTS of water. As far as the rain, we brought ponchos, but by the end of the week, we could have used a second set, those poncho's got a LOT of use! There was not a day that went by that the skies didn't open up and DUMP water! PP was right though, it doesn't last long, and it does clear the parks a bit! We all wore crocs and they soon dried. We had a great time, and can't wait for our trip the last week of this coming August - hope you have a great trip too!!!

We've been to WDW in December (right before Christmas) and the last week of August. The crowds were worse in December....the parks were still crowded in August, but not too bad since schools in the south are back in school by then. It is VERY hot and humid in August, but we found a few things that helped us . We took afternoon breaks to reshower, swim, and cool off at the hotel and we made sure to drink LOTS of water. We went through so many bottles of water a day! We kept around 10 bottles, put water in them and refroze them in our freezer overnight (we stayed at Saratoga Springs) and then packed them in our backpacks and our daughter's stroller. This way, we only had to buy a few waters a day at the parks. Also, most stands that provide drinks will give you free cups of ice, which really helps too! Just pace yourself, drink lots of fluids, and take breaks in the air conditioned rides and stores to help. You'll have so much fun! This year we are trying WDW in June to see if it's any different than December and August. :dance3:

The weather part is easy: sickeningly hot and humid with daily afternoon thunderstorms likely.

Crowds is a whole different discussion. I was there last year Aug. 26th-Sept. 1st and we were pleased with how un-crowded it was. A lot of other people who went in late August agreed. However, there was also a whole group of posters who went at the EXACT SAME TIME and thought the parks were way too crowded. So, there you go. :confused3

Edited to add: DS9, DD5 and I are taking my mom Aug. 21st-29th at POP. See you all there!
