My husband's snoring is terrible. I end up going to the couch most nights and even several rooms away I can still hear it. He wants to buy some device he saw advertised on TV but I'm skepical. Any advice?

Losing weight has helped me. I am not sure if your DH needs to lose weight but that has helped both my DH and myself.

It sounds like from your description that your husband has sleep apnea. My mother has sleep apnea. It is vital that you get this checked out. With sleep apnea you actually stop breathing until you wake up, but you don't realize that you have woken up. this means that you are not getting an appropriate night's sleep and you don't even know it. This leads to sleep deprivation which can affect cognitive functioning and physical healt has well.

The great thing is that once it is discovered there is a fairly easy fix. It is known as Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). It's a mask you wear that keeps the air passages open so you don't stop breathing. It has completely stopped my mom's snoring and now she is getting a full night's sleep. It has been a Godsend for my family.

My son bought Snore-Stop, but I'm not sure how well it's working. My DH rarely snores anymore, even when he has a cold, since he lost weight.

Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea. Only a sleep study will confirm that.

You're right, not everyone who snores has it. If you hear him stopping and starting or hear his breathing stutter that is a sure sign. Sometimes it's not obvious though and as stated, only a sleep study can confirm it. It's not fun, but it can help you pinpoint the problem and if it is sleep apnea you would be amazed at the difference it can make for you.

Low carb diet. My DH went of one and day 5 quit snoring.

When hubby stays away from dairy, he snores much much less.

And as he has lost weight, it gets better as well. But the dairy thing is dramatic, not slow like the weight loss differences.

An ENT can do a full exam and determine exactly what causes the snoring. I have scar tissue in my throat from having my tonsils removed. There's nothing they can do, except a CPAP machine. I've had 2 sleep studies and an MRI of my sinuses and my neck.

My solution tonight was to get up and play on the computer while my husband snores - lol

DH used to snore terribly, then lost weight, and stopped. I actually missed the snoring for awhile.

Then he gained some weight back, and here we go again. Guess I didn't miss it as much as I thought:rotfl:

I find an elbow to the ribs does wonders!!;)

We haven't found a remedy, but I'm hoping someone here has one. DH had a sleep study, and it's not apnea. Which surprised me since his dad, and 2 brothers both have it.

Most of the time, ear plugs (for me, not the snoring DH :goodvibes) works wonders.

My husband tried a variety of things, but what worked for him was the CPAP machine. I agree that everybody who snores doesnt always have sleep apnea. He was actually on the borederline of needed it. Now, I can sleep peacefully. I use to be so cranky and irritable all night because of the snoring, now the bedroom is quiet except for the hum of the machine..That I could live with:thumbsup2

We thought my DH had sleep apnea but now we don't think he does after a stay in the ICU and multiple trips to the doctor for his heart.

He has lost 15 lbs in the last few weeks and already there is a HUGE difference in his snoring. It's not nearly as bad.

I wear ear plugs. They are the small, flesh colored ones. Not those huge ones, they hurt my ears. I have worn them for years and I just turn the baby monitor up a touch and I can still hear the baby just fine.

Good Luck.

My DH snored horrible.. I moved him to another room of the house and could still hear him-- he had 2 sleep studies over the last month and he has sleep apnea as well which the dr said is most likely from the snoring.. He was ordered a CPAP machine - came on Friday - only down fall is - my DH allergies are in full swing with a stuffy nose - so the CPAP machine isn't much help since he can't wear it when his nose is stuffed.. hopefully later this week we will be good to go and he can come back to our room all quite and sleep better.

Thanks for all the advice! My husband really doesn't need to lose weight. Question on the CPAP machines, are they portable and is it easy to take them when traveling? I know we don't know that's what he needs but just wondering because he sometimes travels for work.

My husband takes his everytime he travels, he has taken it on the last two cruises as well. He goes camping with my son for the boyscouts, and if the campground has electricity he takes it as well. One time there was no electric sockets and my son said his father was VERY LOUD at night;)

My mom has allergies too and as far as I know it has never prevented her from wearing her CPAP machine, even when she is incredibly stuffed up. It does still help, but maybe not as much. Once he has had it for awhile he will get used to it.

My family travels all the time and it is never a problem. You can carry it onto an airplane as medical equipment and it does not count against your carry on limit. I would never check it. If you have pets, be careful. Our dachshund has eaten several masks over the course of his lifetime. My mom learned the hard way to keep it behind a closed door and out of reach.

A pillow over the face for about 5 minutes should do the trick.

Hope you find relief soon.

I have snored my entire life, thin/heavy, allergies on or off I have always snored very loud. I've had my cpap for three days. My mom woke me up the first night because she was scared. She couldn't hear me and thought I had stopped breathing LOL After an entire lifetime this has been the only thing that stopped me. I tried all the gimmicks/sprays and weird sleeping positions. The study was expensive but worth it.

My rep told me that when my allergies act up to call him and he will get me a different mask that covers both the nose and mouth. Maybe your husband can get one.

I didn't get that one to start with because I am a side sleeper and none of the triangle masks will let me sleep. I had to get the one that actually goes in your nose (ick) but it works. So I'll just borrow a full face one if it gets to a hard to breathe when my allergies act up. Oh and if you are a light sleeper the machine hums and does a DarthVader thing (sound changes as you breath in or out). So he may still keep you up.
