Am I crazy too consider them with 3 small kids ?.

We are heading to WDW in July, prices for flying is outrageous out of Houston and it's not even direct flight, Spirit has a direct flight for just $235, I'm debating purchasing for 5 of us, but yet I'm scared as the reviews for them are not good .

We are also considering driving the 17 hours.

They are a safe airline.

Their customer service is terrible and of course they nickle and dime you for everything. If you plan to take luggage, you will need to add that to your ticket price. The same applies to seat reservations, snacks, drinks, etc.

My parents fly spirit all the time and love it, but they know what it is. I prefer direct flights in general. Just remember that everything with spirit is extra. So if you want to check a bag, there's a fee. If you want to choose your seat assignment, that's another fee. Putting an item in the overhead bin is another fee. A soda on the flight costs extra.

All that being said, you can minimize some of those costs by doing things like one of you joining the $9 flight club, purchasing things like checked bags ahead of time with that member number, and bringing snacks. I would purchase sodas or other beverages in the terminal and just bring them on.

My parents even have little wheelie bags that fit under the seats so they don't have to pay for luggage at all. But their choices are quite limited where they live in terms of airports and airlines.

I added up all the extras I knew we would pay for traveling with just 3 for my family and found it to be quite comparable with a major carrier when I was done adding it all up.

If you're going to fly Spirit, then join the $9 Fare Club, as its totally worth it. Like the PP, we have small wheeled bags and don't pay for luggage. As long as you go into it with eyes wide open, you should be fine. We love their direct flights, low prices and timely arrivals. Have never had a problem.

I don't know if you would consider it - but JetBlue out of Austin has some awesome prices - I realize that it is 3.5 hours from Houston, but the flight leaves in the afternoon - so you could drive there that day and it comes home mid morning so the drive home wouldn't be bad either. It might be worth the drive, depending on the savings.

Jetblue has assigned seats, no baggage fees.
