Has anyone ever upgraded once they've been in their stateroom?

This is our 4th cruise coming up on Sept 26th and the other 3 times we've been lucky enough to be upgraded from Cat 11 to an 8 or 9. This time, no luck. So I'm wondering if anyone has gotten inside their stateroom and decided to upgrade on the ship? Or is it even possible?(assuming the ship is not sold out) What does it entail?

Also, for anyone that has upgraded at port,(before boarding) from a Cat 11 to a Cat 9, what was the cost for 2 adults?

I don't know if we'll have a problem with an inside stateroom, so I'm just wondering about the cost.

Thanks for your help.

Good Question

From what we know is that the upgrades are done
in the port building before u get on the ship..

We did have our name on an upgrade list
and we did check with guest services on the ship but no luck...
for the PAID upgrade .. we wanted to go from Cat 9 to Verandah

Have also heard of people having some problem with there room
and Being moved to another Higher in Catagory...

this is our Favorite line dont know were it came from But find it Funny..

Guest to DCL, If the President showed up would u Have a room For him ?

DCL, Yes we would , Well He is not coming.. We will take His Room..

dkis4nu, we tried to upgrade at the port from a Cat 8 to a Cat 6 or 5, but the ship was sold out (12/20/03). My DH had been talking to some neighbors who had been on the Magic over Thanksgiving in a Cat 5 and just went on and on about how much they loved their verandah. Unfortunately, he does not frequent the boards, and never mentioned this to me until the day before we sailed, when we were already at WDW, and trying to get all the last minute errands (mailing Xmas gifts, going to the bank, etc.) done before we boarded.

We were more than willing to pay the price...which I believe would have been the highest price for the cabin, if the "closer to the date of sail, the higher the price" theory still prevails the date of sailing. I know that in checking prices for various sailings, the more expensive cats always seem to sell out first, or as the date draws near, Disney is upgrading the lower cat reservations to release lower priced cabins for sale, as those are more marketable and they are able to fill up the ship.

I subscribe to a number of Cruise company websites, and never, ever, have I seen a Disney cruise on a "last minute, cheap price" type list.

You might be able to figure out what your difference would be by going to the DCL website and seeing what the price is for a Cat 9 for the next two sailings for your itinerary. You are only four weeks away, and for this time of year, I would be surprised if there was a tremendous increase in price.

You might check with your TA, or even DU to see if they have any suggestions about trying to get this accomplished beforehand. We decided in August, 2003 (after the ship was sold out) to sail on the 12/20 sailing, but I couldn't find a cabin for sale anywhere. I finally found a TA that had bought up a large number of cabins when the 12/03 dates were released, and they still had 6 or 7 left. It was hard for me to tell whether I got a decent price because the prices were not posted on the DCL site, as everything was sold. We took the best available, which was a Cat 8, for the four of us.

When we got to the port, I had hopes of cancellations enabling us to upgrade, but I guess that would have been more prudent to check on Day 59!

I do have a very good friend who is on these boards a lot (he carries a big fish), whose mantra goes something like this: "Book the cheapest cabin on the best ship -- all you do is sleep there."

I may take his advice next time!

Good luck - have a great trip and let us know if you managed to get upgraded!

Do you always have to have your name on a list before they will upgrqde you? How do you get on the list?

Last cruise (8/14) I inquired about upgrade since I've been upgraded w/out asking previous two cruises. At terminal they told me I'd have to check onboard. Once onboard, Guest Services told me it was w/in control of the terminal until we set sail.

Once we set sail, GS told me to check back after the first port since it was possible late guests would be arriving then. After first port they told me they had to wait until after second port for an accurate count of arriving passengers.

I got the message.

They never said "no" outright, but they were very adept at saying it without saying it, so to speak.

The previous times I was upgraded I was informed at the terminal. My impression is that if it doesn't happen there it "ain't gonna happen."

Of course, my cruise was impacted by Charley delays, etc so I can empathize with the uncertainties expressed. But I still think you stand a slim chance of upgrade once onboard.

just there way of being nice the cruise said sold out but they had a Waitlist going for folk that wanted to pay for an upgrade and said Guest services would be in touch if something should become available...

When we went to Guest Services on embarkation day for our May 1 cruise to take care of some other business, they had a sign sitting on the counter that said something like "Captain Mickey reports that the cruise is full so no upgrades are available." I think if they are sure about the bookings they will let you know.

I can understand the confusion about Charley. I know if I had booked a verandah and wasn't able to join the cruise until the second port, I would have been REALLY upset if it had been given to someone else.

2 years ago on the eastern we had a category 9 . We were the first in line at the terminal and did upgrade to a cat 6 for cash. I believe the difference was around 700.00 back then. DW, 14 DD, 11 DD and myself. When we upgraded DCL up graded us at the counter after payiing to a cat. 4. That was really great. The only thing I can say is that we couldn't upgrade on the phone as it was booke full, but there are always cancellation on the day of the sail. You just have tp be there very early and in line.
