Has anyone ever thought about selling their collection?

My DH and I were sitting her tonight looking at the Disney Cruise information and I was thinking "You know if I sold all my pins I could probably afford a Disney Cruise!" At least half of it! Has anyone ever thought about anything like this? I like my pins but a Cruise! I have framed some of them and they are gorgeous but I could always collect again. I don't know this was just a brain storm and I was wondering if I'm the only one.

Once again, Beth, you are going to give me a heart attack tonight!!

:D :D :D

I'm just messing with ya!! ;)

I can admit that yes, I have thought about selling off some of my collection.
I spoke to someone last week at the NY meet who said that by selling some of her pins she was able to take a trip to WDW and stay at AK for a week.
I spoke to someone today at the CT monthly meet and she likened pin trading to a gambling addict. And when I think about it she is right, collecting is addicting, you sometimes are taken over with the need to get every pin and not think about what you have spent getting it.
I then think about the amount of time I have spent at WDW and done nothing but wait in line, buy and trade pins. This is most true for the August pin event. I spent 4 days inside a building, only getting outside to do the map. Rides and attractions were not as important as getting the pins.
My only problem is how do I decide what pins to get rid of and which ones to keep.
I of course want to keep all my pins with Mickey. Ok, so now that I have decided to keep the Mickeys do I keep the ones that are parts of the set with Mickey? and if I keep the ones with Mickey like the Main Gate, do I keep the other sign pins, or if I keep the Mickey nametags, do I keep the other ones too, like Goofy and Figment?
And what about those LE 1000 and Mystery pins? Do I keep them because they are LE even if they don't go with anything else? Like that dumb Christopher Robin. And I was there when they released the Banner pin, but now when I look at it I wonder why. It was nice for the 2000 celebration because they had those banners at Epcot, but honestly, it is an ugly pin.
Can anyone tell me how to consolidate my pins. Every time I try I wind up with nothing in the to-go pile.
I want to keep collecting, but I am cutting back alot. And I am going to take the cruise and do all the cruise stuff. If I have time to trade I will, but I am not going to miss the shows for pins.
And when I get to the September event, I am going to try and spend the morning at the event, and the afternoon with my family enjoying the parks. Pins last forever, but our family might not, it's time to enjoy the family. Peggie

I used to have a very very large collection of children's magic sets: these are the boxes of toys that you guy in a department store (or Toys R Us or Zainy Brainy). I had ... 700 sets. Took up a lot of space in my one bedroom apartment. A LOT of space.
I sold them and quadrupled the money, then put the money down on a house in 1995. Sold that house and tripled the quardrupled money and put that down on a new house. If you collect the right stuff, and find the right buyer, and are willing to sell at EXACTLY THE RIGHT MOMENT, then you can do very well.
I wouldn't sell something valuable and collectible simply to take a vacation. The value of your collectible will generally always increase--the value of the vacation is gone the moment you take it.

In the past six months or so, I have sold off all my traders. Mostly because I needed the cash (this was money for living expenses(LONG boring story there) , and was not going to pin meets or doing any trading, so figured why do I need the traders?

Then I decided to go through my collection and pick more to sell. I was able to grab a good handful.......then started looking at my whole collection........should I just sell the WHOLE thing?
BUT what happened? I got a renewed interest in pins, came back to the DIS, took those ones I was going to sell , made them my traders, and here I am......addicted again.......and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
I do agree about Pin Trading in the parks.......it has to be in addition to enjoying the parks, not the WHOLE focus.....
I have heard stories of people spending their whole time at WDW doing pins, not seeing ONE attraction or ride. I just couldn't do that......I want the WHOLE Disney experience!

To A Kid at Heart:
I sold off almost my entire Barbie collection last fall. Do I regret it? Well, sometimes. There are a few that I wish that I hadn't sold. It was a sell or else situation to make room for the baby. I suppose he is worth much more than the barbie collection :D

Yes definitely everyone has seen this first hand that I say I am going to sell my pins however at the last minute I pull back just because I realize the true attachment I have to some of the pins, and all the fun I have had trying to get all the pins in my collection. I mean eventually I may sell some of my pins but definitely not my whole collection because with every pin I own there is a special memory in some way, and I don't want to just throw away all of my great and not so great memories I have from this great hobby

Not just pins, but a lot of other stuff. JudySue and I have over the years made a lot of purchases of multiple items. In each instance one for the collection and one to help finance our retirement. Now that this is less than a year away, we will be selling a lot of items to get them out of the house as well as get money to assist with the moving and relocation expenses. However, we will NOT be parting with our collection itself. An example is the Boyer "Mickey's Self Portrait", where we bought two of the limited, signed and numbered edition of 1,000. One is framed and prominently displayed in the house, the other one (still in its original shipping container) will be up for sale shortly.

I have a tendency to go through phases in my collecting obsessions. I went off the deep end back in 1995 with Barbies--my collection was well over 100 dolls. I found I was just buying them to "complete the set" or becuase it was a LE. They overtook my bedroom and apartment. A few short years later I got sick of them and sold off more than half. Now I only have my absolute favorites and those that have special meaning (gifts from friends etc.). I think at last count I had about 35 dolls. Same thing with the pins. I started grabbing up all I could--just becuase they were LE's etc. I have since narrowed my search to 1) Cinderella 2) events I have personally attended and 3) those that I think are so totally cute I just HAVE to have !!! the remainder have turned into traders.
