The last trip we took to WDW was a surprise for my 2 DDs, BUT I'm thinking about planning another. This is the deal...I also would like to surprise my husband. Now, he works full time, so I'd have to figure out how to get him the days off (he has great benefits, including 5+weeks off per year-most of which he rarely uses). I work part time, but I'm doing a week-long consultant job that will pay for the majority of the trip.

Any ideas?! :flower:
Thanks! :sunny:

No but I would love to. I do know a family where the kids surprised their parents with a trip. They called work and arranged time off and every thing.

I would love to do this as a Christmas present for my parents and my sister's family (as well as my own family.) Paying for it is another thing, of course. Gotta play that lotto... :wizard:

What a great idea, I know I'd never be able to keep such a big secret or act suspicious. How did you plan, pack, etc. without them catching on . . .?

My husband and I kept the secret from our daughters for something like 10 months-we woke them up one morning with their bags packed and surprised them! :sunny: I was nervous about the idea of surprising them at first, but it worked out well. I wrote up an "itinerary" that was an easy read for my eight-year-old-it gave her a good overview of each day's events, where we'd be staying, etc. My youngest daughter is soo easy going-but my oldest is more of a planner (like I am), so I was worried about her-but again, having the plans written out so she could read them over & over on the plane trip (plus I had a note to her from her teacher telling her to have fun & giving her info. about the work she needed to complete while she was away) was all very reassuring and she was fine!!

Now to keep the secret from my husband...I'm not sure how I can do it or how he'd react... :confused3

Daxx's Wife here! I surprised Daxx & DS with a Disney trip. Here's the story ... I was offered a teaching job the week before Christmas at a school I was substituting in. I accepted a teaching job a few days before Christmas in 2003 and started after Christmas break. Perfect timing for a gift of a Disney vaca.! Even though I knew I was going to take the job, when Daxx would ask if I'd made a decision, I'd start hemming and hawing about and didn't tell Daxx that I'd accepted it. That made it easy for a surprise!

I called Daxx's boss the day I accepted the job and told him of my plans. I asked him what time frame would be best to take off in the summer and he made the arrangements w/me. He was really, really good about it and said he wished his wife would do the same for him!

With Christmas a few days away, I wrapped up the key to my new classroom in one box and the Disney Vaca. Planning Video (from our July 2003 trip) in another box. I made Daxx and DS open them at the same time. They soooo didn't get it! I had to tell them that I took the job (thus the key to the classroom) and was giving them the gift of a Disney vaca. w/the money I'd be making. They were stunned. I told Daxx that I had booked everything. Of course, he said he didn't know about work vaca. and was shocked when I told him it was all taken care of w/his boss. He was floored b/c he had no idea I worked things out. He was shocked his boss kept it a secret!

In turn, for DS's bday in Oct., we surpised him w/a trip. He had NO idea -- I packed our clothes in a suitcase that was hidden under the bed in the spare bedroom. Our flight was on a Thurs. night ... so after school, I picked him up from Grandma's house and told him that we had to meet Dad at home at 5 pm b/c we had to go plan for my niece's shower and had to be at Aunt Sally's house immediately (aunt lives near the airport). But, I said "Daddy's going to be so mad b/c we have to get there but I have to stop at the teacher's store" which you drive right past the airport to get to. So, Daxx hid the suitcases in the very back of our van. We got home, hopped in the car and I told Daxx that we had to go to the teacher's store near the airport. He pretended to be exasperated, saying it would make us late for Aunt Sally's. So, as we're getting closer to the airport, we see a plane taking off and I say (as I always do when I see an airplane), "Bet they're going to Disney!" and Daxx says "Disney, Disney, Disney!" and I said "I bet you wish you were going!" and DS is in the back of the van, reading a magazine and not saying much. So, we pull into the airport area and are heading to long-term parking. DS still has his face in a magazine. It wasn't until we got to the automated ticket machine that says "Please take your ticket" that DS looks up from his magazine and says "Where are we?" and I said "I don't know -- you tell me!" and he says "The airport?" and I said yes. He asks what we're going there and I tell him (all weepy) "We're taking you to Disney for your Bday!" and DS (as any soon-to-be 8 yo) says "Yeah, right!" I said "We are!" and DS asks where the luggage is. We tell him it's in the back of the van. We parked the van and he says "So, where's the luggage?" and Daxx pulls out our luggage. DS still doesn't believe this ... even as we get our plane tickets and boarding passes. He keeps saying "So, when are we going to turn around and get back in the van?" and I tell him that you can only get through security w/plane tickets. He is still not buying it. It wasn't until we were seated on that airplane that it clicked in that he WAS going to Disney!!!! He was ecstatic and in shock!!!! It was the BEST surprise we ever carried out!! It was even better than the Christmas trip surprise b/c DS had absolutely no idea/clue/etc. that we were going. He didn't even know we had packed bags. He was asking "Did you bring ..." and we'd answer "it's packed!" We thought of everything!!!! Too funny!

Good luck. My advice ... call HR/his boss/whoever does vacations and make arrangements w/them and tell them to keep it hush-hush! It worked for me w/Daxx ... I'm sure it would work for you, too!

What a great story, your family members will always remember your thoughtfulness. Certainly something I'd like to try and plan.

I really want to do this...maybe I'll first look into getting AAA so we can get a better rate... :flower:

So I really looked at our finances today-I've been saving using direct deposit in an account that I had basically forgotten about-by this fall it will have a good chunk of money in it.

If Southwest comes out with another deal for the fall with tickets for $39 each way, I'm DOING IT!! :cool1: :Pinkbounc

I just surprised my husband and 3 year old dd with a trip to Disney. I booked the trip in January after calling his boss to get him the time off. He found out on his b'day (3/23) and we left 4/1/05. It was awesome. Stressful for me though.

Good Luck

My best friends Dad surprised us with a trip to Disneyland! His wife had NO idea he was saving money! He took us to Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon, Hover Dam, LA, Disneyland and Texas! We were gone a month.

Something I will NEVER EVER forget! She has passed away, he has had a stroke but is hangin in there!

I dont see them much now, I think of them on a daily basis. They didnt have to take me, but they did.

Each year, my life philosophy modifies a little. I think you should mainly live within your means because not doing so causes a great deal of stress. However, I also believe you should DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!! :sunny: Going to Walt Disney WOrld with my family makes me VERY VERY HAPPY!! :cool1: So I'm gonna do it...

Awesome! I tried to do this with a trip for DH to Paris. Called his boss, arranged to have him take the week off, then decided against it (too cold, but airfare was only $243/RT!!). I LOVE surprises. Let us know how it goes.

Another possibility if you can't keep things an absolute surprise is a "mystery trip." It doesn't have to be to Disney, although you certainly could plan it that way. My daughters love when I do this - it worked out last year (we went to Hilton head for fall break) and we are going again in August (to Key West and BCV, but don't tell!)

Just ask everyone to block out a certain amount of time, and say no more. You can drop hints if you like, or just make up some random reason you need everyone free (possible family reunion, home repair, big family project, etc.) Then make all your vacation plans and bingo, you have a mystery trip!!!

I'm going to do it-just as long as Southwest gives the good rates again for the Fall (like they've had this Spring-$39. each way). :cool1: They'll lower their rates again, right?! :confused3

I surprised my DH with a belated anniversary trip in 2003. I ended up telling him a month or so before because of some work issues, but had already gotten the time off oked with his supervisor, bought the airline tix & booked the room. Boy was he surprised. Plus we ended up getting upgraded from POFQ to the Poly (for a charge) since POFQ was closing at that time for renovations. It was a quick weekend trip and was great.

I couldn't do that with our family as my DS has a form of autism and would freak out! :)

I am surprising them with a different room, they think we are getting a studio at BWV again and I have us in a 1-bedroom villa-yeah! :teeth:

I love surprises!! :Pinkbounc My husband has done some really special things for me and surprised me in a big way-for instance, this past year was our 10th anniversary, and since we were planning on our trip to Disney as our gift to one another (and our kids), I figured we'd basically exchange cards on the day of our anniversary. He had other ideas...that night he surprised me with a 3-diamond ring-it's soooo beautiful and was an incredible surprise. :flower:

I've been nervous about surprising him with a trip and I'm not sure why... :confused3

We have surprised our kids with trips in the past.
We've told them we were going, but no the exact date. We woke them up early in the a.m. to take them to the airport, and they were very excited! I love to surprise them with fun things like that.

I am thinking that I would love to surprise my family with a trip next Dec. I would even surprise DH. I'm not sure how I would swing it financially, but my neighbor- who is a Disneymaniac- has said she would help with the planning, and hiding of confirmations, etc.

So, Best of Luck to those who love to surprise those they love!
