You know - the recipe that we call "Cheesy Potatoes?" The one with 2# frozen hash browns, a can of cream of soup, sour cream, onions, cheese?

DD wants to take Cheesy Potatoes for a pot luck they are having at work, but wants a way to keep the potatoes warm since people will be eating it at various times throughout the day. I thought that it would be easy to make this in a crock pot, but thought that I would ask you Crock Pot experts first.

Thanks! :)

Yes, I have and it turned gray!

The potatoes since they were exposed to air turned a weird grayish color.

So if you try it, do it as close to serving time as possible, and DO NOT open the pot.

But you could most likely make the potatoes and use the crockpot as a warming device. I've never done that after the gray potato fiasco though

OOO,that sounds so good!! I did a search and couldn't find the recipe. I would love it if you don't mind!
Thanks! :)

I have done this before several times and they have always turned out great...make sure you put the potatoes in while frozen and mix them good so they are all covered..I have not had mine turn grey at all.

You could make them in the oven and then put them in the crock pot to keep them warm.

This is the only way that I have made them. I always start with Frozen or semi frozen potatoes and cook them on low for 4 hours. I would suggest that maybe you turn them down to warm after the 4 hours.
Good luck
Laurie

Thanks for the input everyone! Cindy, I am sorry that your attempt turned out badly :( , but I am glad to hear that KLAIT's and Laurie's turn out well :thumbsup2 .

So I am going to tell DD to put the potatoes together before she goes to work (6:30 am) and to put on the crock pot when she gets to tyhere and then to let it cook for 4 hours or so. She works in a hospital and everyone is taking something in to share for Easter. If I remember, I will let you all know how they turn out. :)

I love to share recipes! :)

There are probably a number of variations on this, but this is how I make mine.

Hash Brown Casserole

1 - 2# bag of frozen southern style hash brown potatoes slightly defrosted
1 cup of chopped onions sauted until tender with 1 stick of margarine or butter
1 can of cream of (any kind you have on hand will work - celery, chicken, mushroom, etc) soup
8 oz - sour cream
8 oz - velveeta shredded (I do not buy the already shredded since it is expensive and velveeta is hard to shred yourself, so I just use my cheese slicer and finely slice or shred the velveeta that way. I also usually use Aldi's brand velveeta. You can use whatever you like.)

Combine all ingredients. Spread mixture in a 9 x 13" pan sprayed with Pam. Sprinkle the top with what you might have on hand - bread crumbs, crushed potatoe chips, etc.

Bake uncovered in a 350 degree oven for about an hour or so - until bubbly.

This is one of our favorite side dishes to share. :)
