my friend has a 4 year old granddaughter--who along with her mother and her 2 other kids all live with my friend

the way my friend told me the story was one of her daughters friends who somewhat of a clean freak cleaned their patio set with a cleaner that contained bleach friend was at work and apparently no one said to the girl not to sit on the chair--the patio set was never rinsed off--the girl must have just dumped this cleaner on the set and just left it

friend DGD sat on the chair not knowing it was just cleaned--a bit later DGD was in pain and her little bottom had burns on it like a very bad sunburn when they took her to the clinic they told them to take her to childrens hospital where they scrapped the dead skin ( sounds gross and painful but they but her under so they could do this)

there seems to be some pieces missing as why no one was watching the girl--friend didn't say anything about not sitting on the chair--girl must have sat a pretty long time for this to absorbed through her clothes and stay on her skin for such a long time to cause those horrible burns--also why didn't the girl get dry clothes if her clothes were so wet

this happened just days after friends daughter boyfriend pushed the little girl down causing her to get scrapes on her cheek and chin--CPS did investigate--said boyfriend is in jail since he pushed her and mother called police

Ive heard of chemical burns but I never thought they could be caused by cleaning products

just thought on how chemical burns happen

Sure, it's possible. Chemical burns happen when some substance causes damage to the skin, and there are thousands of compounds that can cause burns. Plenty of cleaning products can damage the skin, especially if used improperly, and little kids' skin is more delicate than an adult's.

If there was a puddle of undiluted Clorox on the chair that she sat in for awhile, sure, that'd do it. And sometimes people mix up DIY solutions that can be really nasty.

Chemical burns don't always appear instantly. I fried my hand in college opening up a bottle of concentrated hydrogen peroxide. The dried crystals were around the lid, and I gripped that area tightly while I was trying to twist the lid off. Didn't feel a thing at first, my hand got a little itchy after awhile, by the end of class an hour later, yikes, it hurt. My skin was curling up and peeling off. I ended up in the ER, and was in bandages for a couple of weeks. And yes, I learned to always wear gloves in the lab after that, even just to open a bottle.

When I was getting my EMT license, I was doing a clinical in the ER. A guy came in with severe chemical burns to his leg. He and his wife had just bought a house and he was cleaning a shelf in the garage when a gallon-sized bottle of what he thought was a concentrated cleaner fell on his leg and severely burned him. By the time he got to the ER, the burns were third degree.

The horrible thing about this was he had just finished treatments on his other leg for third degree burns caused by a fire where he worked. He knew exactly what he was going to have to go through again and he was devastated.

in south louisiana it's pretty common for homes to get mildew on them. to clean these black marks, you hit them with a bleach compound delivered via a sprayer. well, i mixed it too strong and the sprayer handle was messed up so it kept running down my arm all day. and that's how i learned a prolonged exposure to bleach can give you and unpleasant burn.

My guess is that you feel that there is foul play envolved.

thanks for the understanding on chemical burns I knew this could happen but from it sprayed on chairs without being rinsed and it soaked through her clothes why did she stay in wet clothes theres so many things my friend didn't know the answer too and I hate to admit this but it does sound theres foul play I just feel so bad for the little girl her little bottom was so red and blisters it has to be painful

I'm sure more will come out CPS were called

thanks again

Anybody try asking the kid? At 4 she's old enough to answer at least simple questions like "Was the chair wet when you sat down? Did you tell anybody your hiney was stinging? What did they do then?"

And just a random FYI: never mix ammonia and bleach. It's another chemical compound that not only can cause a burn but forms a gas that could kill you.

Bleach and vinegar also create chlorine gas. I’m always surprised how often I hear about people mixing these products for cleaning. They’re both great on their own but they’re not friends!

Chemical burns can happen so fast, even to adults who are aware of what is going on. We have a friend who power washes houses. His sprayer was dripping one afternoon as he was using it. The washing solution crept down his arm to his arm pit and then down his side. He didn't think much of it at the time. He went straight home, showered and thought everything was fine, but the burn had already started and washing the exposed area did not help at that point. A couple of hours later he was in the hospital with third degree burns.

Given the extraneous circumstances with the boyfriend and the set of factors surrounding this burn, yes, someone will definitely be asking this child questions, as well as all adults and any other children.

I'll leave it at that.

I have no doubt CPS will and that their techniques will glean enough information to provide a reasonable picture of what happened. I was just curious about why the child’s family members hadn’t asked her the really simple stuff already. It’s certainly what I would have done.

The convoluted explanation satisfied my curiosity. Clean freak friend cleans patio set out of the blue, unbeknownst to the owners? Such a tidy explanation. Absolutely no pun intended with an injured four year old.

Yes chemicals burn. Bleach is ACID!

Also you BREATHE it in if you spray.

Use gloves, mask, etc. when using or switch to organic. I use vinegar.

Personally I think it is abusive to send that child there another day. YMMV

Not to be nit picky but bleach is a base :flower3: and like you pointed out will give chemical burns, especially if one were sitting in clothes that were soaked with it and had prolonged exposure to their skin. Poor kid, must have really hurt her.
I totally agree about sending a child to that house ever again.

Bleach is corrosive to the skin. Ever notice the warning symbols on cleaners that contain bleach? The upside down bone hand? Beach definitely can cause a chemical burn.

If it was bleach and the child's pants were any other color than possibly white they would have bleach markings on them. If so, why didn't parents ask question or change the child right away. Also you can smell bleach a mile away. Geesh, if I saw my child with bleach stains I knew were not there before I would be ripping those clothes off them.

Sure, you can get a chemical burn from prolonged skin exposure to bleach. I'm sure it happens.

But once bleach dries, it's not toxic. So if it was enough bleach to soak clothing, and the child sat immediately and for a long period of time...maybe. But more likely if the chair was cleaned, and in a hot, sunny environment, that wasn't it. And there's more to the story.

My gut says more to the story for sure.
