Hello everyone! So when I went to Disney for Easter break in April, the "Easter Bunny" gave my 8 year old brother and I pins. My parents told me that they got them off of Ebay. I was looking at some of them the other day with my Disney fan cousin who also collects pins, and we noticed that some of the pins that we have look like scrappers, or fake. We both had the same pin and noticed one said 2 of 5 and the other one said 3 of 5. The shades of colors on the pins were different, and the weight of one of them was very light and didn't feel real at all. So just a warning for all you pin traders: When you buy pins off of ebay, be very careful!

If you don't have the same pin to compare it to, how can you tell if it's fake? I buy about 50-100 pins off of ebay every year before my Disney vacation. I hope none of mine are fake!

Usually they are fine, but you can tell by feeling the weight. the fake ones are very light and pratically weigh nothing. But usually mine seem to be real. You should really have nothing to worry about :)

The 10/20/50/100 pin lots you can buy on ebay contain mostly scrappers. The lots from chinese sellers are all scrappers.
Compare the pins you have with the pinpics database, sometimes you have to look very closely.

I hate the fact that people would actually make and sell scrappers. It really annoys me. I mean, there's really nothing we can do to stop them, but i wish i could.

We may not be able to stop them directly, but we don't have to be their customers, either. There's a thread on this board called Good/Bad eBay sellers:

that will help you find pins on eBay that are authentic. One of the easiest ways is to buy from one of the people selling starter or booster packs at about $2 per pin.

Good luck, and thanks for raising awareness about scrappers and fakes. That helps, too!

I see a lot of scrappers come through ebay and have also been the victim in the past of it. I learned my lesson though - buy from sellers with great feedback on DIS, don't buy in large quantities, make sure they have a return policy, and buying single pins can be a much safer option.

With this said, I haven't bought pins on ebay for about 2 years, so things could have changed.

Thank you so much! This will really help me in the future when i buy pins! :thumbsup2

If you're getting them in large lots (25-50 pins), if you're paying less than $1.00-$1.50 a pin, and the sellers use stock photos which "may or may not contain your pins" they're almost certainly scrappers.

Think of it like this- these sellers run a business. Disney pins cost a minimum of $6.00 at the park. With luck you can score pins for $2-$3 between sales and the outlet malls.

HOW IN THE WORLD would a seller make a profit when selling pins for $1.25, selling multiple lots of 50-100 pins, that are all legitimate, authorized Disney pins? At best, he'd be taking a minimum $.75 loss per pin.

Good point!

I just wish people on the theme parks board "got it" the way you guys do. I've gotten some nasty PMs telling me to mind my own business and that
How someone spends their money is none of my concern, and scrappers don't hurt anyone...

i recently bought 12 pins on ebay and i looked all of them up online once i got them to make sure they were authentic and all were but one seemed really close to being non authentic but it had me paranoid for a little while

Exactly.

It makes me shake my head when I read that someone has just purchased a large quantity of pins for practically pennies & insists they are WDW authentic. C'mon people!

Wow, thanks for the warning. I won't go there to discuss pins, then! Scrappers do hurt people who get them in trades when they've given up good pins. It's a copyright violation, too; I wish people had more respect for intellectual property.
