Has anyone ever had a septoplasty or rhinoplasty?

I will be undergoing a septoplasty/rhinoplasty surgery on January 12th. I suffer from sleep apnea and my nose has suffered damage due to being broken three times. Has anyone had any surgery like this or close to this?

I have had rhinoplasty. It was cosmetic and not due to an injury. I had my surgery under local anesthesia. I did not feel any pain but I was aware of what the surgeon was doing. I won't go into any details unless you really want to know. There is a high freak out factor if these things bother you. My surgeon said that generally women handle this better than men. I am really good at disassociating myself from what is going on and I think that is what made the surgery so easy.

I don't remember the post surgery pain as being that bad. I didn't want to leave the house for a week or so because of the brace on my nose and my eyes were mildly black. Other than that it wasn't that bad.

I have had ethmoidectomies done. This is when they go into the sinuses and make openings in the bone to help them drain. I didn't have any septal work done. I like my nose. (only thing on my body I do like ;) )

You will probably have some blackening of the eyes if they are doing work on your septum. I have assisted in many of these surgeries. Are you going to sleep? If you have a choice, I would suggest you go ahead and let them put you under. You won't care either way due to the wonderful anesthesia drugs but it will take less time for them if you are asleep. If they keep you "awake", trust me, you won't remember a thing. Maybe a snipet here and there but you won't care at all.

I had a headache the first couple days and then nothing after that. You will probably have some light bloody drainage and they will recommend a gauze pad taped to your nose at first because you might not feel it much. There will probably be some packing in your nostrils that will get removed either just after surgery or in the office. The people I know who have had this done recovered very quickly and felt pretty good afterward. Good luck!

I had rhinoplasty a few years ago. It was a breeze. No pain at all. I was asleep for the procedure.

Good luck!

I had the 2 together, as it sounds like you will. The medications controlled the pain after the surgery but I was afraid to move. The followup was not as bad as expected. I made the mistake of reading the surgical notes after the fact and when I read what they actually did, it made me fairly sick. Just go in to it knowing you'll be pleased after the fact; don't ask exactly how they do the work.;)

I had septoplasty and turbinectomy in 2004- it was much "easier" than I expected. I had very little pain (took the painkillers as directed by the surgeon and I think that kept it at bay). I did throw up after coming out of anesthesia due to all the blood I had swallowed- but that was seriously the worst part!! Good Luck!!

I will be asleep for the surgery. I have a short jaw and jaw problems so I will have to have a "conscious intubation". My surgeons will not put any packing in my nose due to my sleep apenea. I will have two splints inside in my nose that will be stitched in. I will have a nasal cast for 10 days. I will also be having my turibinates reduced during the procedure. In June I will be undergoing a UPPP, adenoid removal and tonsilectomy to further help my sleep apenea.

The worst part of my surgery was removing the packing. And on my follow up visits they would always vaccum all the blood and mucus from my sinus cavities. The vaccuming was always freaky because of the way it felt and having a long metal tube shoved up my nose.
