Has Anyone Ever Had a Reaction to Pistachios?

For the past 6 months or so, I have noticed that whenever I eat pistachios my throat has felt sore - kind of tickly, like I have to keep clearing it - after eating them. It is so odd. :confused3

I thought that perhaps my throat got sore from the papery coating on the nuts or perhaps from the salt. But when I told my friend about it once, she suggested that perhaps it was an allergy to the nut. It kind of makes sense. I just had some pistachios about an hour ago and my throat had the tickly feeling that I have noticed before after eating them.

No one in our house has any food allergies, but I know that you can develop at an allergy any time.

So I was just curious, does this happen to anyone else, or is it just me?

Me! If I eat nuts(any) or eggplant, I get a scratchy itchy throat and mouth. I now avoid nuts but never got tested for allergies.

Mention it to your doctor. If it is an allergy, it can get worse over time, and even cause your throat to swell shut. (anaphylactic reaction)

I think by the sounds of your symptoms you would be wise to give up the pistachios and get some allergy testing.

If you are having tingly, tickly sensations when you eat them, you are most likely having an allergic reaction.

IF you are indeed having an allergic reaction please be aware that the reaction can get more severe with every exposure to the allergen. What was a minor reaction in the past can become a major life threatening problem with no warning.

I would be cautious about this if I were in this position.

My son has a life threatening allergy to peanuts.

My throat doesn't feel funny, but I always feel a little sick to my stomach, headachy if I eat more than a handful or so of pistachios.

Not sure if this is an allergy or not, but it only happens with pistachios, no other nuts (and it makes me sad because I like them!).

I've always wondered if tingling in the throat or lips could feel like twitching? If I eat almonds my lips feel like they are twitching and sometimes my stomach burns....but not always. I would keep some benadryl handy when you eat pistachios. My yougest son had a throat related allergy incident that was scary but the benadryl helped a lot. His allergy Dr is thinking that it was not anaphylasis (thank goodness). We do have an epi-pen just to be safe.

I do like pistachios - but I could live my life without eating them. It is easy enough to avoid them.

I will mention it to the Dr., but I don't know that I will push testing. This has happened enough for me to know pistachios = some kind of throat reaction, no need to pay to have someone tell me.

But you know it's like someone TELLING you that you can't have something - now you want it.

Sounds like an allergic reaction. Lay off the pistachios immediately. As Cruisin mentioned, this can get very bad very fast.

My father has a deadly reaction to macadamia nuts and learned to stay away from them about 35 years ago. Last year, the Planters company decided to add macadamias to their mixed cans. Dad, not knowing this new addition, was not paying attention to what he was eating as he was not looking at the nuts, but rather watching tv. He called my mom, who was at work, and told her he thinks he needed to go to the ER, because he might have eaten something bad. Mom took him to the ER for the shot and upon inspection of the nut can, found macadamias as a new ingredient. I have never eaten a macadamia for fear I would have the same reaction. I often wonder what one tastes like.

My best friends DD is allergic to them.
When she was about 8, she was eating them one evening & her throat started closing up (they had no idea she was allergic), the next thing I knew...there was an ambulance outside in the street & she was being taken to the hospital.

I'm am allergic to tree nuts, some more severely than others. If you are alelrgic to one (and it sounds like you are) you MUST consider yourself allergic to all, and must also consider yourself highly likely to be or become allergic to peanuts, possibly without warning.

Talk to your doctor who will probably prescribe an epi-pen amongst other things.

Allergies are nothing to mess around with. They can kill.

I agree with Ducklite. Once you find out you are allergic to one of the nuts you *should* avoid them all. One of the reasons is that the canned nuts are all processed in the same facility and go through the same machines so they contaminate each other. I guess it would be okay to eat uncracked walnuts but, if I were you, I would start avoiding all nuts.

And I know you don't want to pay someone to tell you what you think you know, but it is actually important to get it documented. It really does sound like you are having an allergic reaction but it may not be--it could be some other type of sensitivity. If it is an allergic reaction it would be good to have it confirmed so you know to avoid other nuts also--if you didn't test positive then stringent measures would not be required.

I have a different type of reaction to Pistachios.

If I eat one, something unconsciously takes over control of my limbs and I reach out, shell another and stick it in my mouth. The whole scary process just keeps happening over and over again until the last pistachio is history.

I need help.

Any chance you are eating the "red" pistachios? It could be a reaction to they dye they use?

I had a similar experience with shrimp. Over the course of a couple years, I had varying degrees of reactions. The last time I ate shrimp, I ended up covered in hives. I don't see the need to go for allergy testing, I think it's fairly obvious that's what it is. I don't eat any other fish/shellfish, except for tunafish, so I don't really think it's necessary.

I can live without the shrimp (better that than cookies, I say), but damn if I don't want shrimp every time I see it....
